B-4—Anaheim Gazette
Anaheim, Thursday, Aug. 24, 1961
To maintain reserve forces trained and ready for immediate mobilization, the Navy requires its reservists to serve two weeks of active training duty each summer.
Aboard the destroyer escort USS Marsh for this reserve training duty is Robert E. Noggle, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Noggle of 837 Hampsstead, Anaheim.
The Marsh, operating out of Long Beach, is providing the reservists with an opportunity to practice the anti-submarine warfare techniques they study during their weekly meetings during the rest of the year.
Army PFC Lionel G. Herrold, 20, son of Mrs. Helen E. Herrold, 223 N. Euclid Ave., Anaheim, recently participated with other personnel from the 4th Armored Division in a five-week field training exercise in Grafenwohr, Germany.
During this exercise members of the division received training in military skills ranging from individual physical training to the firing of guided missiles.

Herrold, a mechanic in Headquarters Company of the division's 54th Infantry which is regularly located in Heilbronn, entered the Army in August 1960, completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and arrived overseas last March.
Herrold is a 1959 graduate of Coachella Valley Union High School and attended Fullerton Junior College. Before entering the Army he was employed by Richfield Station in Buena Park.
The ships of Amphibious Squadron Five, commanded by Navy Captain R. B. Erly, will arrive in San Diego later this month from service with the powerful Seventh Fleet in the Far East.
Serving aboard the attack cargo ship USS Skagit, one of the ships of the squadron, is Bruce E. Duncan, seaman, USN, son of Mrs. D. E. Loving of 9532 Colchester, Anaheim.
During their 8½ months in the Western Pacific, the ships delivered 734 tons of Operation Handclasp relief goods donated by American citizens, participated in the giant SEATO exercise Pony Express on the coast of North Borneo, received more than 8,000 local visitors in "open houses" held in many Far Eastern ports and donated more than 2,500 pints of blood to foreign Red Cross agencies.
The squadron's landing ships and cargo vessels supply the transportation backbone for amphibious assaults.
Army Sergeant First Class Elmer F. Rockers, whose wife, Betty, lives at 7676 El Monte Dr., Buena Park, recently was awarded the Army Commendation Medal while serving with the 57th Artillery, a Nike-Hercules missile unit at Fort MucArthur.
