Anaheim Doctors Named To Heart Group Board
John J. Sampson, M.D., San Francisco, the new president of the California Heart Association, recently addressed members and guests attending the Orange County Heart Association's annual meeting.
Dr. Sampson stressed the importance of research and pointed out recent developments in the field. "It is now possible to photograph the inside of the heart and blood vessels, to detect or evaluate the degree of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)," said Sampson. "This is accomplished by inserting a plastic tube catheter—an instrument which carries light through circular paths—into the blood vessels themselves."
He revealed some other new accomplishments in the field, which include: "The use of digital computers in accurate diagnosis of heart disease; detecting holes in the heart by variances in blood pressure and body temperature; a pacemaker which has been developed to regulate the beat of the heart; and the successful synthetic heart, which can assume the function of a damaged heart if necessary."
Sidney J. Adler, M.D., of Anaheim, chairman, reported for the nominating committee.

Practi-Products Junior Achievement Company — composed of teenagers from Orange, Anaheim, Fullerton, Santa Ana and Buena Park — ended its eight-month period of business operations today by declaring a four per cent dividend.
"The business operation of Practi-Products was an overwhelming success. Harper Brubaker, vice president and group executive of Hughes Aircraft Company's ground systems group here, stated.
Hughes ground systems is the counselling firm for Practi-Products.
"Practi-Products sold its complete stock of 160 Handi-Caddys to Orange County residents. Handi-Caddy is a two piece, five-by seven-inch wooden display rack and holder for dishes, books, signs, records, etc.," Bob Trust, teenage president of the J.A. company, said.
