Helsel, airman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Helsel of 2013 W. Broadway. The carrier and crew recently ended a seven-month cruise with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. Army Pvt. Leonard C. Mang, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar E. Mang, 1027 S. Harbor Blvd., recently was assigned to the veterinary food inspection department at the Presidio of San Francisco. A food inspection specialist in the department, Mang entered the Army last January and completed basic training at Fort Ord. A member of Gamma Phi Delta fraternity, the 24-year-old soldier is a 1954 graduate of Anaheim Union High School and a 1959 graduate of California State Polytechnic College in Pomona. Crewmembers of Navy ships always serve as goodwill ambassadors when in foreign ports, but if they're crewmembers of a station ship they also serve as middle-men for other visiting U.S. ships. Serving aboard the destroyer escort USS Bauer, station ship at Hong Kong, is Donald E. Pelser, sonarman third class, USN, son of Mrs. Alma L. Pelser of 752 N. Olive. The Bauer stays anchored in Hong Kong Harbor, gathering weather data, relaying supplies to other ships putting into harbor, and keeping a stockpile of information for visiting sailors about the customs, language, and traditions of the local people. Crewmembers of the heavy cruiser USS Helena visited Portland, Ore., with nine ships of the U.S. First Fleet to participate in the 53rd annual Portland Rose Festival. Serving aboard the cruiser during the visit was James V. Brailsford, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Anderson of 1009 S. Harbor. The Portland Rose Festival is a 10-day celebration that is world-renowned for its pageantry, colorful parades and spectacular attractions. Navymen mingled with the citizens of Portland and visitors from all over the world as the "City of Roses" honored the flower which blooms in grandeur and profusion in Portland's favorable climate. Ships of the U.S. First Fleet, under the command of Vice Admiral Charles L. Melson, visited Portland to take part in the festivities, to take advantage of opportunities for liberty and recreation, and to provide the people of Portland with a better understanding of the importance of sea power and the Navy's role in the nation's defense structure. The general public was invited to board the ships daily for open house. Graduating recently from recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, was Marine Pvt. Bernard R. The Taussig, along with an anti-submarine warfare ship aircraft carrier USS Kearne and seven other destrivers, is a member of the Red Hunter-Killer (HUK) Group ALFA. These ships have been operating together since November 1960, devising new tactics for the protection friendly ships from attack enemy submarines and, where necessary, locating and stroying the subs. In keeping with the President's "People-to-People" program, Taussig has also carried thousands of pounds of clothing and food to needy in Far Eastern countries collecting funds to send seven Japanese high school students to the United States under student exchange program; hosting a large group of Japanese orphans aboard the ship. Serving with the Third Marine Division on Okinawa; the Pacific is Marine Cpl. E. Hurst, son of Mr. and M.H. D. Hurst of 7622 Gunlane Lane. The division recently returned to Okinawa after completing their phase in the largest combined amphibious-verte assault exercise in the history of the South East Asia Treat Organization (SEATO).
