THE RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELE
Criticism by the Republican "truth squad" of Governor Edmund G. Brown's legislation program will merely confuse the minds of the general public.
We believe that the program instituted by the Governor had many good points. It was supported by a number of Republicans in the Senate and the Assembly.
Criticism just for the sake of criticizing an opponent in our opinion is not good politics. It can do the Republican party more harm than good. Millions of Californians still agree that Governor Brown is doing a good job in Sacramento regardless of what the Republican hierarchy from downtown Los Angeles has said.
The Gazette is a Republican newspaper and has been for many years. But we believe in fair play and we are convinced that "Pat" Brown is making an honest effort to serve his state with integrity.
If the Republicans hope to recapture the control of the State Legislature, they must depend on votes from Independents and Democrats. They cannot hope to get them if they antagonize the many Democrats who believe the present legislature has done a good job.
THE FIRST STONE
Distressing as Alabama race riots have been, it is even more disturbing to see how many Americans feel this nation deserves world censure for its mishandling of the problem.
In the first place, the people who were attacked by mobs in Montgomery were asking for trouble.
It is no news that certain southern state and local officials are either unable or unwilling to comply with federal court directive in the matter of segregation. Nor is this a matter for which an entire nation should be condemned.

In the first place, the people who were attacked by mobs in Montgomery were asking for trouble.
It is no news that certain southern state and local officials are either unable or unwilling to comply with federal court directive in the matter of segregation. Nor is this a matter for which an entire nation should be condemned.
What other nation, being without sin, can cast the first stone?
The emerging African nations, presumably our most valid critics on the race issue but actually the worst practitioners of racism? India, with its tenacious caste system? Russia, with its "liberation" of Asiatics and its inclination toward anti-Semitism? England, which has hardly had noble success in solving a much less severe race problem?
The problem in America cannot be solved by directives from Attorney General Robert Kennedy. It calls for understanding which neither the "New Frontier" nor Europe seem to have.
YOUR LEGISLATOR AT WORK
SEN. JOHN A. MURDY, JR.
State Senator
It was heartening to return to Orange County this week and find so many people interested in the operations of government and concerned about the policies and procedures now being practiced.
This is a healthy trend although there are dangers and pitfalls to watch on both sides of the political fence.
On one side is the danger of extremist hate groups getting the upper hand. On the other side, the liberal tends to overlook or rationalize left-wing or subversive trends.
By this I do not necessarily mean everyone should endorse Dixon Gayer's Webster Quimmley Society for middle-of-the-roaders.
But it appears even the middle-of-the-roaders have been motivated to thought.
In a society such as ours, we can never have agreement of philosophy or thought. As a Republic we have learned to live together in reasonable
Awards Made by Theatre Guild
The Orange Theatre Guild held their second annual awards and installation banquet in the Panorama Room of the Lafayette Hotel in Long Beach recently.
Awards were presented for the best performances of the 1960-61 season. Receiving the trophies were: best actor, Dr. Irwin Lawton, D.D.S., Anaheim, as Solomon Levy in "Abie's Irish Rose"; best supporting actor, Jack Schlatter, Garden Grove, as Dr. Lyman in "Bus Stop"; best supporting actress, Mrs. Nancy Sullard, Tustin, as Ida, the maid, in "See How They Run"; best bit part, Ed Brown, Anaheim, as Father Whalen in "Abie's Irish Rose."
The best direction was won by John McCarty, Orange, for "My Three Angels"; the best production was "Abie's Irish Rose," directed by Jack Arnold, Garden Grove; and a "special achievement" award (recipient chosen by the four directors) was presented to John O'Neil, Anaheim.
The judges were Neil Annas, John Craig and Mrs. Minnie Every morning the editors of the Berlin daily newspapers, and the correspondents of those published elsewhere in Germany, gathered at the office of the Propaganda Minister to be TOLD by Dr. Goebbels what news to print and what news to suppress, how to write the news and headline it, what campaigns to call off or institute, and what editorials were desired for that day. It is impossible for those of us who have not lived under a totalitarian government (as yet) to conceive how difficult it is to escape the dread consequences of calculated and incessant propaganda.
When JFK was a candidate he said, "I want to be a President who has the confidence of the people—and who takes the people into his confidence—who lets them know what he is doing and where we are going." Since becoming President, he has inaugurated a strict censorship that keeps the public from knowing what he is doing and where we are going. He has instituted an incessant and massive self-serving propaganda program. An Inter-Departmental Memo was issued requiring that all statements and all releases made by the various departments and agencies should include "liberal quotations from the President" to show his deep compassion for the people.
The first evidence of censorship was the rebuke of Admiral Arleigh Burke, chief of naval operations, for saying that JFK's task force had determined there was no missile gap. The White House denied he had made the statement, although it was made in public and easily verified. This was followed by the demand that the news services should withhold from the public the news that the two American fliers shot down by Russian in the Bering Sea had been released and were in the hands of our Ambassador Thompson in Moscow. The news services had
But it appears even the middle-of-the-roaders have been motivated to thought.
In a society such as ours, we can never have agreement of philosophy or thought. As a Republic we have learned to live together in reasonable peace. So, too, it is my wish that the world could do the same.
It is a mature and responsible world that can settle its differences without war.
One cannot come away from the state capitol in Sacramento after six months of legislation and not realize that our system of government is not perfect.
But as far as I'm concerned, it's the best the world has ever seen and it should be defended to the last man.
The American people haven't done a good job on public relations.
Too many people in the world have the wrong impression about the American people, their business, and government.
Unless we do something about this, we can still lose the world to Communism no matter how patriotic we become within our borders.
There are millions of people in the world that are poverty-stricken, hungry, diseased, uneducated and unhappy. With a little Communist inducement, they become resentful of America.
The best direction was won by John McCarty, Orange, for "My Three Angels"; the best production was "Abie's Irish Rose," directed by Jack Arnold, Garden Grove; and a "special achievement" award (recipient chosen by the four directors) was presented to John O'Neill, Anaheim.
The judges were Neil Annas, John Craig and Mrs. Minnie Surles, all of Anaheim. Tabulation of the judges' vote and presentation of the awards was by Norm Goodin of Orange.
ica and the Western Allies.
The Communists, meanwhile, have moved in to fill the belies of these people, offer them promise of a bright future, and brainwash them with propaganda.
We have supported dictatorships to protect the status quo or other interests. But oppressed people, with a little help, eventually rise up.
Cuba might be free today had we not dropped the ball. Had we not turned our heads the other way in hopes the real problem would go away, the Cuban people would be shouting "Yankee Si" today.
Inscribed atop Office Building No. 1 at the state capitol in Sacramento are the words:
"Bring me men to match my mountains."
But I fear we are still trudging through the foothills.
After the Key West meeting with Prime Minister MacMillan, Pierre Salinger set up a press briefing from which some of the White House correspondents were excluded, and when these correspondents complained about it, Salinger simply said that there had been no briefing. This was not the truth, and does not inspire confidence. The Copley Press which owns, among others, the San Diego Union, and has not been too complimentary about the activities of the New Frontier, has been unable to get its correspondents on trips with gap. The White House denied he had made the statement, although it was made in public and easily verified. This was followed by the demand that the news services should withhold from the public the news that the two American filers shot down by Russian in the Bering Sea had been released and were in the hands of our Ambassador Thompson in Moscow. The news services had this information 18 HOURS before the President's first televised news conference, and he wanted to personally release this sensational information. Surely this did not show compassion for the wives and families of these two filers nor for the American public. Even yet, the White House has refused to permit these two filers to tell the whole story of the shooting down of the aircraft, their rescue and imprisonment by Russia.

Again, when the President went to Palm Beach, Salinger assured the news corps that there would be no news break on that trip, but the biggest news break of the year was given at Palm Beach to some of the favored White House correspondents: That was the announcement of the forthcoming summit meeting with Khrushchev.
The President did not want the public to know that he was an avid golf player, and will not permit newsmen to photograph him with golf clubs nor on the golf course.
Pentagon news. No corresponment wants or is seeking to give information to the public on anything involving security, but all sources of information from the Pentagon have been closed. Even-the Army-Navy-Air Force Register and Defense Times, a private publication, has been denied information to the point that their issue of June 17, 1961, used a black cover to their magazine and entitled that issue "Pentagon News Blackout." Without the prying eyes of the press, skeletons can be buried,

The President even went so far as to demand that a certain commentator, not favorable to the Administration, should be removed from the broadcasting staff if that agency expected to get news breaks from the White House. He indicated that the favored correspondents should be on a first-name basis with him.
Apparently our foreign relations dealing with Castro have been taken out of the State Department and placed in the hands of private citizens. Upon their return from Havana after the blackmailer, Castro, had upped his price from $15 million to $28 million, the committee refused to be interviewed and wished only to report to their superiors. Mrs. Roosevelt, Mr. Reuther and Dr. Milton Eisenhower. Again, I ask, "Where are we going;"
It is regrettable that President Kennedy has a back aliment, and I sincerely wish him rapid recovery. But the public is entitled to know how he is faring. Hagerty used to issue hourly bulletins on Eisenhower's health. Pierre Salinger will not even talk to the newsmen about it. Last week when the President presented the Robert J. Collier Trophy to Vice Admiral William F. Raborn Jr., who directed development of the Polaris missile, he was June graduates of Fullerton Junior College have been awarded permanent membership in Alpha Gamma Sigma, California junior college honor society, it has been announced by Gordon R.
