Hunsaker, 701 Romneya Via, Anaheim, recently became a member of the Seventh U.S. Army's Order of Gold Patrots while serving with the 4th Armor Group in Germany. Members of this voluntary movement have pledged their support of President John F. Kennedy in reducing the outflow of gold from the U.S. In doing they have agreed to save a certain percentage of their pay each month. Chapters of the Order are being established in all units throughout the Seventh Army. Specialist Clodt, assigned to the group's Headquarters Company in Frankfurt, entered the Army in December 1959, completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and arrived overseas in July 1960. A six-day goodwill cruise to Canada ended in San Francisco recently for the radar picket ship USS Scanner. Serving aboard the ship during the cruise was Bruce G. Bailey, quartermaster third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Bailey of 1940 E. Sycamore St. The Scanner visited the Esquimalt Canadian Naval Base at Victoria, B.C., her first visit to a foreign port since 1956. The Scanner, a unit of Radar Picket Squadron One, maintains long-range air surveillance for the North American Air Defense System (NORAD) which protects the U.S. and Canada, an area of more than 10 million square miles, from any possible hostile air attack 24 hours a day. Equipped with long-range air search radar, the Scanner detects, tracks and reports on all air traffic within its assigned area of surveillance. Should an air attack be attempted, each radar picket ship has the ability to control the offensive action of the land and ocean based Navy and Air Force fighter interceptors in repelling and destroying attacking aircraft. Army Specialist Four Larry L. Meadows, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard L. Meadows, 9192 Chanticleer Rd., is a member of the Sixth U.S. Army Band at the Presidio of San Francisco.
