Residents Get Tips for Vacation This wouldnt happen anywhere but Southern California: They'll be holding a zany float parade at high noon in mid-Summer at a desert resort, and a few days later they'll be melting down the world's biggest ice igloo on the beach beside the ocean. These are highlights of colorful events in July in the calendar released by the All-Year Club today. They play a valuable part in the All-Year Club's work of attracting out-of-state tourists who spent over $715 million here last year. The zany desert parade will be held July 15 as a highlight of the Sun Worshippers Festival at Borrego Springs on the theme: "It's fun to live in the desert in Summer." Since Hermosa Beach is honoring Alaska as well as Hawaii in its Hermosa Holidays July 28 to 30, they'll build what's billed as the world's biggest igloo out of ice blocks on the beach and award an Alaskan trip to whoever makes the best guess at the hour and minute the sun melts it down. Long Beach stages a beauty contest that's different — no bathing suits, but playsuits, formal gowns and their national costumes are worn by beauties from 60 countries in the International Beauty Congress July 20 to 30 to choose "Miss International Beauty." Hundreds of residents act as models authentically costumed and made-up by artists and festival of Arts at Laguna Beach July 15 to August 13. The world's longest table will stretch 2½ miles beneath the pepper trees at Ontario for the All-States picnic attended by 75,000 visitors and former residents of other states July 4. An Orange Juice Tree and Lemonade Tree will pour free drinks. The world's biggest little boat race will be sailed at Newport Harbor July 30, the Flight of the Snowbirds, a regatta of some 160 little Snowbird sailboats, many skippered by youngsters—last year's youngest were 7-year-old girl twins. For the 25th year Santa Barbara holds its Summer Sports Festival July 1 to 4 with over 43 events on land and sea ranging from cricket to kite flying. A parade of decorated boats of all sizes down to a bathtub opens the Dam-A-Rama July 1 to 4 at Lake Isabella back of Isabella Dam on the Kern River. There will be a water rodeo using barrels for animals, barefoot water skiing, and a skier soaring into the air with a kite. The "Symphonies Under the Stars" opens in the Hollywood Bowl July 6 for the 40th year, with concerts, "pop" music and guest artists, until September 2. It's a month of colorful California historical events. San Clemente holds the Fiesta La Cristianita pageant July 21 to 23, commemorating the first Christian baptism by the Franciscan padres there in 1769. Franciscan padres of Mission San Luis Rey near Oceanside will follow the old custom of blessing farm animals and children's pets July 22 and on the following day, Sunday, there will be an outdoor Fiesta mass composed during the Indian days and using the old vestments. A costumed Father Junipero Serra leads a procession of Indians, padres, pioneers and Spanish soldiers in the annual trek from the old Adobe Chapel in Old Town, San Diego, to the Serra Cross in Presidio Park on July 16. In July 4th observances, the mammoth 57th annual Orange County parade at Huntington Beach will take a Civil War theme, bringing out unusually colorful costumes.
