Philharmonic Forms Men's Committee As the Orange County Philharmonic Society grows and matures in step with the rapid development of Orange County, the long-felt need for a men's committee has become a reality with the establishment of the Commerce and Industry Committee. The organizational meeting was held in the office of Dr. Lloyd P. Smith, research director of the Aeronutronic Division of the Ford Motor Company, Newport Beach. Clifford Hakes, president of the Philharmonic Society, presider at the informal gathering when the following members of the board of directors of the Philharmonic accepted the invitation to serve on this important committee. Heading the Commerce and Industry Committee is Dr. Smith, who will have as co-chairman Edwin F. Steen. Other committee members are Clifford Hakes, Robert Guggenheim Jr., H. Verne Woodruff, Urban Beh, Ralph Miller, Thomas E. Smith, William J. Haney of Fullerton and L. Delford Federman of Santa Ana. Although the Society's Continuance Fund Drive for membership is seasonal, the Commerce and Industry Committee will function throughout the year in order to allow industry to participate according to their budget for the fiscal year. Jose Greco to Be At Greek Theater Dysingers Feted At Villa Marina The Villa Marina in Newport Beach was the setting Saturday night, June 10, for an informal dinner party honoring retiring District Superintendent Glen H. Dysinger Sr. and his lovely wife Verlie. The board of trustees and the administrative staff Centralia District hosted an informal gathering in a month of "happy traveling." The Dysingers are planning an extensive tour of Southwestern United States and Mexico their trailer, "Teacher's Pet" after his retirement next month. The Dysingers were showcased with small "traveling" gifts in party games climaxed by the presentation of two silver caelabras, a gift from the group by Willia mAlmand, president of the board of trustees. Mrs. Palmer Campen and Mrs. Earl Travers present Mrs. Dysinger with a miniature gold school bell with peac clapper and a corsage of clustered pink rose buds. Honoring the Dysingers were Mr. and Mrs. William Alman Fete Daniel Rose At Biola College On June 4 Daniel Rose, well-known Hebrew Christian, was honored by the board of directors of The Bible Institute of Los Angeles, Inc., with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities. The ceremonies were part of the historic annual graduation exercises held on the Biola campus in La Mirada. Rose has directed the work of the Bible Institute's Jewish department for more than a quarter century, having been called to the position by Dr. Louis Talbot, then president of Biola and pastor of the Church of the Open Door. He has labored tirelessly in special weekly meetings for the Jewish people, door-to-door evangelism, Bible teaching and other ministries. Although limited by time in his service, since he is now in his 92nd year, Rose is as earnest and zealous as in the days when the work first began. The ministry of the Jewish department of Biola and the church includes a weekly afternoon meeting at 2:30 at which time Norman Allensworth, director, conducts a special pro-program of inspiration. Survival Is Topic For Health Group In cooperation with civil defense the Rev. Dallas Roquemore, lecturer and writer on survival, addressed the Orange County Health Federation in Anaheim Monday and spoke on "Survival." The Rev. Roquemore has written a book, "Get Ye Up Into the Mountains," as a survival manual. It contains such information as how to survive in cold weather and how to stay warm during winter. JOSE GRECO Exciting Jose Greco, the dynamic Spanish dancer who has added a vivid new page to the history of Spanish dance art, returns to the Greek Theater of Los Angeles at the head of his colorful dance company for a week of stirring performances, including an American premiere, Monday through Saturday nights, July 3-8, at 8:30. The premiere is "Tiempos de Goya," or "Times of Goya," choreographed by Greco himself to a motif suggested by the paintings of the renowned artist. Greco himself will dance exhilarating solos and will be partner to seductive Lola de Ronda in romantic duos. Carmen Mora, José Molina, Curro Rodriguez, Maria del Rocio, Rosario Caro and other perennial favorites dance in solos and with the scintillating ensemble. The appealing voice of Norina will be augmented by the flamenco singing of Manuela de Jerez, the guitars of Miguel Garcia and Emilio de Diego and the piano of Lyria del Mar, all under the musical direction of Roger Machado. Gladiolus Show Is June 24-25 Hundreds of Southern California's finest gladiolus, all sizes A. B. Paul Group Has Flag Ceremony The A. B. Paul Women's Relief Corps was hostess for the June "Tribute to the Flag" held in Pearson Park. Members of the Daughters of Union Veterans and the Malvern Hill Relief Corps of Fullerton were present for the impressive ceremony. A potluck dinner was followed by a program of talks by Sylvia Myers, Florence David Alice Robert and Nell Fatt Cremation of the old flag was conducted by the A. B. Paul officers. This year's convention was held in Fresno and was attended by Virginia Closseu, president; Mary Mitchell, official nurse; and Alice Funk. Mr. Closseu received honors for bringing in the most members during the year. A report was made on the memorial for Civil War veterans now being built in Springfield, Ill. The Social Club will meet if the Optimist clubrooms June 26 for a potluck. Federation No. 1 will meet in IOOF Hall July 24 at noon. Military training provided additional knowledge. Gladiolus Show Is June 24-25 Hundreds of Southern California's finest gladiolus, all sizes and all colors, will be on display in "Glad Times in June," the 15th annual Gladiolus Show at the California Museum of Science and Industry. Exposition Park, June 24-25. Show highlight will be the introduction of the 1961 All-American Gladiolus selections, the China Blue, Gypsy and the Rusty. Fourteen separate awards will be presented to outstanding entries. Top award is the Grand Champion Spike of the Show, a perpetual trophy of the Southern California Gladiolus Society, exhibit sponsors. HOBBIEST TO ENTER FAIR—Mrs. Worthen Mossey, 1773 Heather Ln., Anheim, again hopes to walk away with prizes from the July 11 to 16 Orange County Fair. Last year she took a second for her Rooster Lamp entered in the children's painting class of the Hobbies Division. This year she is busily working on hooked rug which she plans to enter in the Clothing and Textiles Division of the Senior Home Economics Department by entry deadline of June 20. Teenagers to Be — In Stage Play The Orange Theatre Guild has announced that it will produce a summer stock show, "Our Town," with an all-teenage cast. The Orange Theatre Guild has long felt that, as a community organization, it is regrettable that it has not been able to utilize more the great wealth of teenage talent in Orange County. The production will be as nearly 100 per cent teenage as possible, including all the actors and actresses and most of the back-stage personnel. The play will be directed by Jack Schlatter, Garden Grove High School drama instructor, assisted by several adult members of the Orange Theatre Guild acting as supervising technical advisors. Open readings for the 28 parts in "Our Town" have already been held on the stage of the Orange Theatre in downtown Orange. These auditions are open to any teenager up to and including 19. BENEFIT DANCE At 7:30 p.m. tomgrrow and Saturday students of the Rosalia Holland dance studio will perform at the Union High School auditorium in Garden Grove for the benefit of the Democratic Club Hears Dope Talk The plight of law enforcement officers in controlling the dope traffic was outlined at the Tuesday meeting of the Anaheim Democratic Club. Undercover officers from the Orange County Sheriff's office, Homer Mitchell and Floyd Owens, also showed a movie, "Narcosis," and answered questions from the group. Also during the meeting, delegates Art Egbert, Ed Walsh, Harry Callen, Leslie Jones and alternate Herb Eggert reported on the question of recognizing the county council of clubs along assembly-congressional district lines, as discussed at the County CDC meeting a week ago. Anaheim Orchestra In L. A. Carnival The Anaheim Youth Symphony Orchestra was a special feature of the third annual Children's Carnival at the Pilgrimage Theatre in Hollywood Saturday and Sunday. Presented by the Los Angeles chapter of the American National Theatre and Academy, the festive carnival offered in its two-day period a succession of plays, music, ballet clowns, acrobats and other attractions along a midway and outdoor Protest Dropping Of OC Classes Protest over the dropping knitting and weaving classes. Orange Coast College was listed by 19 members of classes who attended the 12 board of trustees meet. The board took their pro under advisement. At a recent board meeting trustees agreed to drop one adult education courses to the college offering. Knitting and weaving were among eight which also included ownership, good grooming, er arranging, rug making, wood carving and physical ditioning for women. Women interested in weaving were spearheaded by Mrs. lip Gold, Newport Beach, Mrs. Herb Small, Costa Mesa Both women told the board believed that weaving course were important to the textile industry and were trained women for employment in various facets of the textile industry. Mrs. Williston Bradway Laguna Beach spoke on behalf of the knitting students present. She said such a course is needed, trains a person to knitting either as a source income or for leisure hour enjoyment. Heart Group Annual Meet Orange County Heart Association held its annual last night preceded social hour and dinner. J. Sampson, M.D., presided over the California Heart Association, was guest speaker on topic "The Application of Research to Human Disease." CONFERENCE This week Dr. Morrison of Temple Beth of Orange County is leading the annual meeting Central Conference of San Rabbis in New York June 19-24. BENEFIT DANCE At 7:30 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday students of the Rosalia Holland dance studio will perform at the Union High School auditorium in Garden Grove for the benefit of the Orange County Association for Retarded Children. These talented young people will present the ballets "Swan Lake" and "Gaite Parisienne." Also on the program will be exhibitions of modern jazz and tap dancing. Net proceeds will go to the Orange County Association for Retarded Children. Anaheim Symphony Sets Last Concert "Bonus" concert program featuring the music of three greats of symphonic music—Bach, Mozart, Beethoven—and contemporary English composer Vaughn Williams will conclude the Anaheim Symphony Season on Sunday evening, June 25. The special concert, an extra for the season, is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. at the Anaheim High School auditorium under the direction of Eugene Ober, conductor. The full-sized symphony orchestra which draws upon professional and qualified amateur musical talent in Orange County is already in rehearsals preparing for this concert which was made possible by the Musicians' Trust Fund of the Recording Industries. The Anaheim Symphony has been recognized as having contributed to the advancement of music in Orange County through the enthusiastic support of its membership. Therefore special funds were made available to the Anaheim Symphony Association by application to Musicians Local 7 to present this bonus concert to the community of Anaheim. There will be no admission charge for this concert. The "bonus" concert coincides with the drive for new members for the 1961-62 Symphony Season.
