B6—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, June 1, 1961 ORANGE COUNTY FAIR ENTRY PIONEER—Mrs. Perry V: Grout will again be one of the entrants in the $30,000 premium competition of the 1961 "Hawaiian Holidays" Orange County Fair, July 11 to 16. The Home Economics and Bee and Honey departments blue-ribbon winner has been taking Fair awards since the Fair theme was "Save for Victory" —a World War I slogan. Ambrose Students In Piano Recital Students of Arlane Ambrose News About Our Service Men Gary L. Hammer, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mrs. Lucille F. Womac of 237 Ash St. is serving aboard the ocean non-magnetic minesweeper USS Gallant participating in Phase III of "Exercise Green Light" off the Coast of California. Scheduled from May 8 to June 8, this phase of the exercise involves Navy and Marine Corps undersea, surface, air and ground forces, supported by minesweepers of the Royal Canadian Navy. Highlight of the operation will be a large scale amphibious landing by the First Marine Division in the Camp Pendleton, Calif., area. The landing force will be supported by an amphibious task force and aircraft. Army PFC Robert M. Champe Jr., whose wife, Loeldine, lives at 2316 W. Roberta, Fullerton, Calif., completed the eight-week construction drafting course at The Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Va., May 12. Champe was trained to lay out and present various views of objects to scale as working plans for such items as bridges, airfields, buildings and machines. The 22-year-old soldier entered the Army in September 1959 and received basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. He has served in the Far East. Before entering the Army, Ambrose Students In Piano Recital Students of Arlane Ambrose gave a piano recital Sunday in the Terrace Room of Peek Mortuary in Westminster. Participating were Jackie Cleveland, Susan Dunkin, Vivian Dunkin and Linda Byers of Anaheim; and Linda McKee, Joanne Whitehall, Mark McKinney, Sharon Keller, Cynthia Ambrose and Cerrie Cleveland of Garden Grove. Champe was employed by Nortronics Division of Northrop Aircraft, Inc., Anaheim. Army 2nd Lt. Charles T. Schmitt of Anaheim completed the nine-week ranger course at The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., recently. Lieutenant Schmitt was trained in the skills and techniques of fieldcraft, survival, mountain, jungle, swamp and waterborne operations and was trained to fight under extremely hazardous combat conditions. The Infantry School constantly prepares a better infantry for our Army by training and developing the leadership qualities of combat commanders. Marine Sgt. William H. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Brown of 910 N. West St., is serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at the Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The air station is the home of the First Marine Brigade, a combat-ready, air-ground fighting team of the Pacific Fleet Marine Force. Marine Lance Cpl. William D. Army Pfc. Lawerence W. Faye Jr., whose parents live at 624 Bellview Dr., participated in Exercise Spring Tonic, a V Corps field training exercise in Germany which ended April 27. Spring Tonic was designed to test the ability of signal units to provide fast, efficient field communications between V Corps headquarters and other corps units under simulated combat conditions. Marine Sgt. Daniel H. Andes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Andes of 101 E Vine St., participated in the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) Exercise "Pony Express" on North Borneo while serving with the Third Marine Division, headquartered on Okinawa. The amphibious maneuver which included participation by 6,000 personnel and ships of six of the eight SEATO nations, was conducted in an effort to promote a closer working relationship and understanding among member nations. Hope Sunday Leaders Named Orange County Superior Judge Franklin G. West, of Ta Ana, and George Cours, of Corona del Mar, have named co-chairmen of the "Hope Sunday" drive on June 4 for the City of Hope in Orange County. They are expected to lead an army of 8,000 volunteer "Citizens of Hope" in the doorto-door campaign. Judge West is serving for his fourth consecutive year as a leader in the drive.
