HER FIRST ENTRY—Proud that her first entry in the 1961 Orange County Fair—July 11 to 16—will be crisp red radishes, nine-year-old Linda Courreges shows her family how she hopes the bunch she grows will look. The Courreges family of 8572 Talbert Ave., Fountain Valley, has been entering the Orange County Fair since 1949 and has taken a total of more than 500 awards. Approving Linda's entry are her sisters, from left, Janice and Irene, and her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Courreges. Mellott, Newport Beach construction executive. Featured speaker and guest of honor at the $50 per plate dinner will be 1960 standard bearer Richard M. Nixon. Named to head up the committee on arrangements and program for the fund-raising event was Thomas E. Smith, Santa Ana, long an active Republican campaigner. Assisting him will be Santa Ana public relations executive Chip Clearly and Fullerton publicist Zan Thompson, in charge of press arrangements. Yorba Linda GOP leader Fred Alkire was named ticket chairman for the dinner, while GOP Administrator Terry Jones will act as assistant to the general chairman. Tickets are available from Orange County Republican Central Committee headquarters, 2675 North Main St., Santa Ana, from all Republican clubs throughout Orange County, and from all members of the committee. Scholarship Winners Told Dorothy M. Emerson, and Ernest R. Obermayr, seniors at Fullerton Union High School, have been named winners of four-year Southern California Edison Company college scholarships, Fred T. Schell, Edison's Orange County Division manager announced today. Kuchel Views Fruit Trade U.S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel of California said today he has been encouraged about prospects for increased foreign sales of California fruit and fruit products because of representations being made by the State Department for lowering of non-tariff trade barriers of certain European countries. In response to a strong roundrobin letter from the Senior California Senator and several colleagues from major fruit-growing areas, Assistant Secretary of State Brooks Hays has just reported on progress registered recently in opening overseas markets for fresh and processed citrus and deciduous tree fruits. The State Department official pledged that the diplomatic branch will "continue to do our utmost to obtain the elimination of remaining restrictions" as well as prevent erection of new trade barriers. OCC Contest Set Students' drawings and model houses are being readied for the annual Newport-Balboa Savings and Loan architectural drafting contest on May 31, according to Oscar Taylor, Orange Coast College instructor. Winners will be announced on June 1. The display will be set up during the day with judging beginning at 5:30 p.m. Second year students' display will be set up in the Art Gallery and first year in Art Center 10. Motel Installs Newest System By Phone Firm Anaheim's Saga motor hotel, on the Harbor Boulevard "strip," has installed an ultra-modern communications system, it was announced today by Saga manager Robert Hobbs. One of Pacific Telerhone's newest services has been included in the automatic switchboard installation. The first of its kind in Orange County, it is called "message waiting" service. A small but brilliant red lamp on the guest room telephone flashes continuously to indicate a waiting telephone message, mail or other communications. "The guests calls as soon as he returns." Hobbs pointed out. "This eliminates notes, door tags and complaints. Also, guests may dial direct to other guest rooms and other hotel services, including the gift shop, bellboy, restaurant and so forth." Hobbs says guest dialing is an important feature of the system, offering speed plus privacy. And he adds, "We're happy to be the first Orange County hotel to offer free local calls." In addition to the streamlined 24-hour PBX service, the motel offers free Bell System teletype reservations for guests moving on to other cities across the nation. Classes Offered During Summer Ernest R. Obermayr, seniors at Fullerton Union High School, have been named winners of four-year Southern California Edison Company college scholarships, Fred T. Schell, Edison's Orange County Division manager announced today. Winners will be announced on June 1. The display will be set up during the day with judging beginning at 5:30 p.m. Second year students' display will be set up in the Art Gallery and first year in Art Center 10. SAFE WALKING TIPS WEAR SOMETHING WHITE AFTER DARK When the sun goes down, pedestrian deaths go up. The reduced visibility during the darkness hours makes both walking and driving conditions more difficult. It is no coincidence that the greatest number of pedestrian deaths occur during December—the month with the most hours of darkness. As the days grow longer, the toll drops off sharply. The Automobile Club of Southern California offers the following advice: You can protect yourself best when walking at night by wearing a light article of clothing, preferably shoes or stockings (trousers in the case of men) since the headlight beam of most cars will first hit low on the body. On the other hand, dark clothing greatly reduces the distance you can be seen by approaching vehicles, in some cases, as much as 50 per cent. Don't take unnecessary chances. Wear something white at night, and give the driver a chance to see you. From PLANNED PEDESTRIAN PROGRAM, published by The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Classes Offered During Summer For the fourth consecutive summer, Centralia district will provide fourth, fifth and sixth grade youngsters an opportunity to attend classes in two separate programs, according to George C. Williams, assistant superintendent of education. The more capable fifth and sixth grade students will select from a curriculum including art, public speaking, science, math, California History and Geography, music, literature, creative writing and developmental physical education. Students taking remedial reading classes will also have an opportunity to participate in art and science classes. A favorite theme of anti-capitalistic soap box orators is the terrible exploitation of resources and people by the managers of capitalist societies. Oddly enough, it is only in capitalistic societies that countless voluntary associations of private citizens are found which are genuinely dedicated to the well being of people and the conservation of every kind of resource from the air we breathe to the products of the land. These activities conduct their good works without fanfare or recognition. Students Begin Home Stretch Western High School students are on their academic "home stretch" with just a few weeks remaining to bring in good grades for another year. Seniors are working for positions at the top of the honor student list and to gain recognition as Sealbearers from the California Scholarship Federation. The leading academic students will be rewarded by marching at the head of their class and wearing special academic regalia at June 15 graduation. Many scholarship awards and honors will be presented to the graduating Pioneers at the annual Senior Awards Assembly scheduled for Thursday, June 1. Representatives of area clubs and organizations will be on hand to make presentations and numerous Communities Scholarship Association grants will be awarded at this time. Turn Warning Ignorance to the proper place to make U-turns apparently is causing a number of motorists to violate the law. Capt. F. E. Winchell, commander of the California Highway Patrol's Anaheim area, said this week.
