AVALANCHE MOUNTING STATE GAS TAXES PROPOSED EXTENSION OF A FEDERAL GAS TAX WATCH OUT FOR FALLING ROCKS CURRENTY TAX ANAHEIM (Continued from Page 1-A) to Seaboard Finance Company office at 131 E. Center St. and less severe damage to adjacent Office Barber Shop. Officials of city, county and Metropolitan Water District met high in the Olive hill above Anaheim this week to break ground officially for Anaheim's newest water storage project—a 60 million gallon reservoir. A pedestrian accident struck while crossing an Anaheim street Friday afternoon has died in Anaheim Memorial Hospital, the coroner's office reported this week. The victim is Anneliese Margaret Harriet 39, 801 N. Loara St. The Federal Aviation Agency dropped a new factor into airport planning for Anaheim this week by issuing a report to Congress on a five-year airport building program. Among 35 new airports the $1.1 billion program lists for California would be one in Anaheim. Three proposals for survey firms for study on feasibility of Anaheim having a municipal auditorium are in the hands of city councilmen. They have held up decision on the matter for more study. The proposals were referred to the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and Visitors and Convention Bureau after it was revealed they had LONG ARM Another income tax time has come and gone. And millions of us feel a sad flatness in the pocketbook. Once it was the "big guy" who got hit by the taxes. But these are the cold facts: Of the total federal tax, people who earn under $5,000 a year pay 21 per cent. The $5,000 to $10,000 group pays 39 per cent. The $10,000 to $15,000 earners pay 11 per cent. The $15,000-$50,000 people pay 17 per cent. And the real big income group—$50,000 and over pays 12 per cent. If anything it looks like a long while before the smaller man gets any relief although he is paying the bulks of the taxes. FORGOTTEN MAN The Russians take a pretty big case in almost any field. But when it comes to serving the consumer, this is only the thinnest pretense. In the Communist world he's truly a forgotten man. With 30 million more mouths to feed than we have, the Soviet Union turns out around 4.3 billion containers of canned food a year. We produce 24 billion annually. The Russians have put up their man in space. But one space they could pay far more attention to is the housewife's food shelf. THIS DAY OF LABELS COMMENT Three proposals for survey firms for study on feasibility of Anaheim having a municipal auditorium are in the hands of city councilmen. They have held up decision on the matter for more study. The proposals were referred to the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and Visitors and Convention Bureau after it was revealed they had not had opportunity to review them. Freedman, who has presented information to the grand jury on the lack of master city zoning ordinance, has charged that the council was negligent in zoning the property to R-3 with conditions, last August. He said the action resulted in Anaheim Union High School District losing "untold thousands" on property under condemnation for a high school. He said that it caused an increase in property values—loss to taxpayers. Residents claim the developer of the disputed property, Spehar, is expected to file another application for C-1 (commercial) within six months. They say he withdrew a C-1 application, turned down by the Planning Commission, before the Council could act on it. Gil Meyters, 1308 Flacon Plain also in the shadow of the unwanted project, voiced this opinion:otic condition of the city's plan Spehar should respect the entrance to Anawood and put single residences there instead of multiple or commercial units. It would make a commercial canyon and we and visitors to our homes would have to drive through it...” With 30 million more mouths to feed than we have, the Soviet Union turns out around 4.3 billion containers of canned food a year. We produce 24 billion annually. The Russians have put up their man in space. But one space they could pay far more attention to is the housewife’s food shelf. THIS DAY OF LABELS This word “communist” is getting out of hand. It’s become a word for anyone who doesn’t agree with a particular line of thinking. To be a communist is one thing. But to be accused of being one because your views differ with the other side is definitely way out of line. This probably was what resulted in filing of a $150,000 damage suit last week by a La Habra minister who alleges a Fullerton dentist publicly called him a communist. It would be interesting to see if the courts can come up with an answer to this problem. In this day of “labels” we can only hope for “stronger definitions” if we are to continue this name calling. Letters to the Editor To the Editor: As chairman of publicity for the recent Holy Week and Easter Services sponsored by the Association of Christian Churches of Anaheim, I wish to express on their behalf our deep appreciation to the Anaheim Gazette for the excellent publicity which you furnished us. We feel that the services were meaningful and helpful to all who attended and served as a fine expression of the spirit that exists among the churches and people of our community. The fine community spirit which you extended to us through your medium of communication helped immeasurably in bringing the services to the attention of countless people. Thank you for your help. Sincerely yours, WALTER J. VERNON, Minister. COMMENT (Continued from Page 1-A) in public schools never used much of the time. Now certain unthinking groups are asking us to spend more money for parks. All this means is a higher tax rate—less money to spend for improving our own homes. Which would you rather have: a better backyard and home area or a gigantic system of parks? You can have that public park any day. But for us we’ll try to buy a little bigger piece of suburbia by improving our own “backyard” so the family can stay where it belongs—at home. Museum Exhibit How life in Orange County has changed is evidenced by a summons served for Irvine Flint and Company against seven head of horses and 12 head of cattle for “damage done by grazing on natural grasses” in 1873. This is but one item of a new exhibit at the Charles W. Bowers Museum, 2002 N. Main St., Santa Ana. NAHEIM continued from Page 1-A) Board Finance Company at 131 E. The proposals referred to the Anaheim center of Commerce and Visand Convention Bureau was revealed they had NATIONAL OUTLOOK By Ralph Robey From time to time a group of top corporate executives and several of our most outstanding business economists have a dinner for the purpose of discussing what is happening currently and the general outlook. The record shows that the conclusion of the group is accurate to an amazing degree. There was such a dinner a few evenings ago and the views of the 10 business managers and the seven economists make it clear that we have gone through the worst of the recession and are on the verge of a broad over-all upturn. Since business statistics of necessity cover only past events it will be some time before it can be determined just which was the low month. In terms of gross national product, which is the monetary value of all goods and services produced in the nation, it is fairly certain that the bottom will have been the first quarter of this year. This figure is compiled only every three months and current guessing is that the total for the first quarter will be a shade under $500 billion. The all-time high was in the second three months of last year. That was $505 billion. This is a good indication of how mild this let-down was for the economic system as a whole. Gas Company Offers Grants To Workshop Southern Counties Gas Co. is sponsoring a limited number of scholarships for the University of Southern California's Home Planning Workshop, according to Justin M. Kennedy, Orange County division manager for Southern Counties. These tuition scholarships will be available to high school homemaking and college level home economics instructors. Recipients of the scholarships will be selected by the University of Southern California. Applications may be obtained at any Southern Counties or Southern California Gas Co. office, and must be filed by May 1, the gas company official said. The three-week course will run from June 19 to July 7 during the SC summer session. It will carry three units of graduate credit toward the Master of Science in Education degree. Nixon Plans Former Vice President ard M. Nixon will return home county of Orange major address before a Rican fund-raising dinner Tuesday, June 6, it was nounced by County GOP man C. Willard Key of Ft. ton. "We are most pleased Nixon was able to fit a visit into his busy schedule," stated. He pointed out that ititions are pouring into ther Vice President's Los geles office at the rate o per day, and said, "This m giving unselfishly of his in the cause of conserv good government. The all-time high was in the second three months of last year. That was $505 billion. This is a good indication of how mild this let-down was for the economic system as a whole. Among the innumerable bits of evidence that a general up trend is ahead, and already has started in some important segments, the following may be cited: Steel production is showing a slight gain almost every week. The increase is not large, and output still is low, but the persistence of the improvement is impressive. Automobile sales have begun to rise. Current estimates are that for the year as a whole the public will buy about 5½ million domestic cars and some 400,000 imports. That is not a great automobile year, but it is better than appeared probable a few weeks ago. Farm income is rising and agricultural machinery is selling better. Retail trade for the nation as a whole is up moderately. New orders at the manufacturing level have improved and in some lines are now adding to the backlog. Total industrial production, as measured by the index of the Federal Reserve Board, is leveling out and may actually have passed its low. Housing starts are still well under a year ago, but recently have been on the upgrade. They will not make a new high in 1961, but over-all construction gives every indication of setting a new record this year. Business inventories still are being liquidated but most of the drop is now at the retail level, and this means that we are close to the end of this process. By the end of the year it is now probable that we shall be on the upside again insofar as inventories are concerned. By the end of the year it is now probable that we shall be on the upside again insofar as inventories are concerned. Business investment in plant and equipment is still declining but quite slowly, and recent surveys indicate it will pick up before the end of this year. Exports remain strong. We shall still have an international deficit in our aggregate balance of payments this year but it will be much less than in 1960. The Federal Reserve System still is providing plenty of lending power to our commercial banks, and the money supply has been increasing for many months. Government spending at all levels is getting larger, but the increase has not yet been sufficient to be measurable in the business trend. Employment is at an all-time high, but unemployment remains a serious problem. So does the continued squeeze on business profits and many other difficulties. But at least we are on the road to recovery. Balanced Power home modern automation gas equipment provides inviting indoor climate the year 'round—with remarkable operating economy assured. And with adequate wiring and plenty of well-placed outlets, a Balanced Power home lets you plan proper lighting to enhance the beauty of your furnishings. Let gas do the jobs best done by gas...let electricity do the jobs best done by electricity. The common-sense standard is the concept so beautifully demonstrated in Balanced Power home. Modern gas does such jobs as heating and air conditioning. Build Your Future Home Now! Nixon Plans County Talk Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon will return to his home county of Orange for a major address before a Republican fund-raising dinner on Tuesday, June 6, it was announced by County GOP Chair C. Willard Key of Fullerton. "We are most pleased that Nixon was able to fit a visit into his busy schedule," Key noted. He pointed out that invitations are pouring into the former Vice President's Los Angeles office at the rate of 200 day, and said, "This man is ing unselfishly of his time the cause of conservative, good government. We deem it great honor that he has in- included Orange County as one of the very first stops on his summer tour through the United States." Food consumption in the United States averaged 1488 pounds per person last year. By insurance company height-weight standards, 48 million Americans are overweight.
