County GOP Chairman Hits Action by ACLU
"The statement by the Southern California' president of the American Civil Liberties Union that 'We don't feel it's important to salute the American flag ... it's just flexing our muscles' should leave no doubt in the minds of patriotic Americans as to the true nature of the ACLU," according to a statement from C. Willard Key of Fullerton, chairman of the Orange County Republican Central Committee.
The statement regarding the flag was made Friday evening, April 7, at a Buena Park ACLU meeting supposedly called to instill patriotism and to discuss the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Making the statement was Lloyd Smith, Los Angeles attorney, and president of the Southern California branch of the ACLU. He was replying to a question from the audience as to why, at a meeting called to discuss the Constitution, no move was made to salute the American flag on the stage.
"In my opinion," the GOP chairman said, "any organization whose president would refer to saluting our national flag as 'unimportant' and 'flexing our muscles' bears very close watching."
was a signer of petitions to ban nuclear testing and to abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Riles cited such current examples of segregation as the establishment of special schools for negroes in San Francisco in 1851. He stated that discrimination is now practiced in the state in the matter of appointing administrative officers for schools but was unable to come up with an example when asked by the audience to do so.
Riles is a vice president of the ACLU and in 1959 was a member of the "World Committee for Peaceful Cooperation," which has been under investigation by federal agencies.
Featured speaker of the evening was John Anson Ford, chairman of the California Fair Employment Practices Commission. Ford, former chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, has a long record of such stands as refusing to vote to order registration of Communists in California and
