Students Hear Tips on Marriage from Counselors
Parents are seldom wrong when they oppose a marriage planned by one of their children, marriage counselor and psychologist Dr. Louis King told an assembly of Fullerton Junior College students, including those from Anaheim, last week. "Listen to them a little," he advised.
Dr. King first asked the students, gathered for the annual marriage assembly at the college, to answer 10 questions honestly, promising them to predict from the answers whether they would be happy in marriage.
These were the questions:
Are you happy in your present living situation? Do you enjoy your parents' company? Do you enjoy school or are you just looking forward to getting out? Do you like people and do they like you? Do you get along well with those of your own sex? Are you eager to get married? If you're a male, do you get along well with your mother; if female, with your father? Do your friends like the person you are dating and do his or her friends like you?
Dr. King then insisted that the answers to all except "Are you eager to get married?" should be answered "yes" if you expect to be happy in marriage.
Dr. King also advised the Orange County Science Fair Judges Picked
Twenty outstanding scientists, industrialists and college professors have accepted appointment as contest judges for the sixth annual Orange County Science Fair at Santa Ana College April 29-May 3.
Mrs. Stella Brubaker, Orange High School science instructor and chairman of the judging committee for the sponsoring Orange County Science Teachers Association, said judging will be conducted on Saturday, April 29, after SAC's Cook Gymnasium has been filled with more than 700 junior high and senior high exhibits.
The judging panels will include:
Physical Science:
Mathematics: James P. Manning, American Thermos Co., Anaheim; Jay Davis, Santa Ana College, and Vaughn D. Brown, Fullerton Junior College.
Chemistry: Gordon Douglas, Santa Ana College; Robert E. Lepper, Fullerton Junior College; Dr. Robert Sprague, Aeronutronics Research Laboratories Newport Beach.
Hawaiian Favorite—Popular Hilo Hattie, Hawaii's ambassador good-will, and her full range of attractions at the National Orange Show, April 29-30. Hattie will present her show nightly, starting April 21, on the new over-the-water marine stage and will also be seen in Swing Auditorium productions.
Dr. King then insisted that the answers to all except "Are you eager to get married?" should be answered "yes" if you expect to be happy in marriage.
Dr. King also advised the following: Don't marry to escape. Don't marry for potential—if a person is lazy before marriage, he'll be lazy afterward. Love and respect yourself first. Don't have children unless you really want them. Be sure of your religious attitudes before you get into marriage. If your parents are unhappy, get help in understanding yourself and what they have helped make you.
In general the psychologist opposed early marriages. At one point he suggested that "the average junior college student should feel that at present for him marriage is for the birds."
Dr. King holds degrees in psychology, social work, and counseling and guidance. He has worked for the Veterans Administration and the Popee noe Marriage Clinic.
