Are Food Superstitions Still Bothering You? If So, You’ll Enjoy This!
Is it true that meat is “virility food” and fish is “brain food”? Is spinach really that good for junior? Food scientists say no to all three.
The more you eat, the more energy you’ll get for any maneuver—physical or mental. But the energy doesn’t come from meat and fish alone. And though spinach does have mineral wealth, the minerals aren’t in a form the human body can use very easily.
Food superstitions are as old as a woman’s search for a good husband—which will end successfully if she wears a sachet of dried tomato seeds around her neck, says one old wives’ tale.
Or if you’ve got too many suitors, put apple seeds on a hot plate and name them after your boy friends. The seed that make their starch cells softer, more digestible.
What about tomato juice and milk at the same meal being bad for you? Does too much meat damage the liver and kidneys? Too many eggs cause heart trouble?
No to all three, says a renowned Canadian professor of
Added Building Loan Business Seen by Firm
Reports of optimism among the nation’s home builders are being received by Home Savings and Loan Association which announces continuing creases in funds it has available for home construction and purchase loans.
Kenneth D. Childs, president of the concern, said this week the association had a net flow of $24,948,174 in savings in January, believed to be the highest for the month recorded by any savings and loan association in the nation.
At month-end the company total savings accounts amounted to $785,371,486. During 1990 it had $154 million, or 25 percent net growth in savings.
Salt was so precious in the ancient days that each grain spilled was “sure to become a tear” unless you threw the grains on the stove to dry the tears in the nick of time!
“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are,” said Brillat-Savarin, the great French food expert.
He was right in more than one way. You can tell in a broad sense what part of France a Frenchman hails from by giving him an egg to fry!

Food superstitions are as old as a woman's search for a good husband—which will end successfully if she wears a sachet of dried tomato seeds around her neck, says one old wives' tale.
Or if you've got too many suitors, put apple seeds on a hot plate and name them after your boy friends. The seed that pops the first is the one you really love.
Afraid of vampires biting you in the dark of the night? A bedtime necklace of wild garlic will terrify the most ferocious of vamps—provided the garlic was "gathered in May"!
Groundless Beliefs
Many of the more modern beliefs about eating are also groundless superstitions. Food that's remained in an open can is not dangerous to eat; it spoils no faster than in any other open container.
And here's a tip from the food chemists to those who do their own canning: Be sure to use a steam pressure cooker. Ordinary boiling doesn't kill many of the germs that really cause food poisoning.
Is raw food always better than cooked food? Not at all. Most of the vegetables you ordinarily cook need heat to make their starch cells softer, more digestible.
What about tomato juice and milk at he same meal being bad for you? Does too much meat damage the liver and kidneys? Too many eggs cause heart trouble?
No to all three, says a renowned Canadian professor of nutrition.
Lobster and Ice Cream
And have no fear about lobster on the same table with ice cream. You won't get deathly sick as grandma used to think. Unless, of course, you eat too much of them.
Are any food superstitions really dangerous? Many of the above can be, if carried to extremes. One of the most dangerous is the belief that processed and packaged foods aren't as healthy as old-fashioned food fresh (?) from the cracker barrel.
This superstition is damaging food research in America today. Chemical food additives being used by modern science actually enrich our foods (vitamins are chemicals), make them better tasting (flavoring agents), and make them stay fresh longer (preservatives).
Salt First Additive
Speaking of additives, salt He was right in more than one way. You can tell in a broad sense what part of France a Frenchman hails from by giving him an egg to fry!

Since we've left fancies for facts, it really is a fact hat Irish eat more potatoes per capita than any other people.
Colombia tops the sugar eaters (125 pounds per person each year compared to 90 in the USA).
Icelanders drink more milk per capita than anybody else, and Uruguayans eat the most meat: 264 pounds for every person every year (the figure is 174 in the USA).
In many countries around the world, food enters life through strange doors.
The ancient Easter Islanders were egg-worshippers. They not only lived in houses shaped like eggs, but the man who won the yearly egg-gathering contest was elected king.
The Others
Other appointments in the new class are open to: members of the regular and reserve components of the Air Force and Army; sons of deceased veterans; sons of members of the regular components of the Armed Forces; sons of Medal of Honor winners; and honor graduates of honor military schools. The Academy will furnish complete information.
770 Young Men... And Their Next Four Years
Winning an appointment to the Academy is a signal honor in itself. Exacting standards and a fast-building tradition of uncommon achievements will soon impress this upon new cadets during their first year. It's a test that every upper-classman has gone through. A cadet receives four years of college education.
...and its next class of 770 young men
As with every new class its members will come from all of the 50 states. They will be between the ages of 17 and 22 and they will be uniformly above average ... morally, physically and scholastically.
During the rigorous four-year Academy program, some won't make it. It's not easy to get in, and it's not easy to stay in.
Those who do graduate will find unparalleled career opportunities awaiting them in the Aerospace Age. During the next decade a great number of Air Force officers who entered the service in World War II will be retiring from active duty. Academy graduates of this newest class of 770 young men will have the highest command positions opened to them before they will have completed half of their service career.
The 700 Congressional Nominees
Almost 700 members of the Academy's new class will be nominated for appointment by Senators and Representatives from their respective states and congressional districts. Should you (a young man) or you (a parent) be interested in how application for such a nomination may be secured, write to your Senator, Representative...or to the Registrar, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado.
Winning an appointment to the Academy is a signal honor in itself. Exacting standards and a fast-building tradition of uncommon achievements will soon impress this upon new cadets during their first year. It's a test that every upper-classman has gone through. A cadet receives four years of collegiate and professional education. He graduates with a second lieutenant's commission in the Regular Air Force. In addition he receives a bachelor of science degree. A cadet with special ability may take elective courses and major in a subject area of his choice. One with unusual ability and previous college work may fulfill the requirements for a master's degree during four years at the Academy.
Required Examinations Prior to Appointment
The College Entrance Examination Board tests, the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, a Physical Aptitude Examination and the Academy Medical Examination determine which young men are best qualified for appointment. For full information on how one becomes one of the 770 men of the next new class, write Registrar, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado.

Single Auto Cases Lead in Car Fatalities
More than half of the fatal accidents investigated by California Highway Patrol officers during 1960 involved a single vehicle, Commissioner Bradford M. Crittenden reported this week.
"Of 1977 fatal accidents in patrol areas, 1111 were in the one-car category," said Crittenden.
"The implication is obvious. Your safety as a driver rests squarely in your own hands. In a majority of last year's fatal accidents, the driver of the involved car had only himself to blame.
"The patrol often has emphasized defensive driving as a protection against the unexpected actions of other drivers, but it is equally important to recognize the causes which contribute to accidents of individual cars.
"The sensible application of safe driving practices is the surest defense against motor vehicle accidents of any type," Commissioner Crittenden concluded.
Postal regulations state that undeliverable letters bearing an advertising name and address of a hotel motel will not be returned to that address. These letters if undeliverable as addressed would be sent to Dead Letter Office.

Veterans' Disability Percentage Requirements for Pensions Listed
Information on disability percentage requirements for veterans seeking pension was listice Officer Ben Liebermann.
The requirements apply to World War I, World War II and Korean Conflict veterans seeking pensions for non-service connected disabilities under the provisions of Public Law 86-211, the Veterans Pension Act of 1960, which took effect last July 1.
Definite income and net worth restrictions apply to all pensions.
At age 65 the veterans is required to have one disability ratable (by the Veterans Administration) at 10 percent or more.
At 60 the percentage requirement is 50 percent for one or more disabilities.
At 55 the percentage required this week by Veterans Serviement is 60 percent on one or more disabilities, with no percentage requirement for any one disability.
If the veteran is under 55 and has one disability it must be ratable at 60 percent or more. If he is under 55 and has two or more disabilities, at least one of them must be ratable at 40 percent or more and there must be sufficient disability to bring his combined disability rating to 70 percent or more.
Liebermann pointed out that veterans whose disabilities do not meet the percentages but who are considered unemployable because of their disabilities may receive pension consideration.
Disabilities must not be the result of a veteran's own willful misconduct.
Benefits for all veterans (and dependents) applying for pension under PL 86-211 are determined on a sliding scale according to their income, wife's income and their net worth. Larger pensions on the scale are paid to those with the least income, and each individual case must be considered separately.
