Kiwanians to Sponsor Car Safety, Economy Run for Local Students Students of Anaheim Union and Western High Schools will participate March 18 in a safety-economy run sponsored by the Southwest Anaheim Kiwanis Club, it was announced today by Ralph B. Clark, chief steward for the event and Kiwanis member. Some 60 students will have a chance to display their driving skills in the contest patterned after the annual Mobilgas Economy Run. Prizes in the contest go not to the swift, but to the safe and economical. Drivers will be judged on the amount of gasoline consumed driving over a course of approximately 100 miles, while adult observers riding in each car assess penalties for any violations of highway safety rules. Furnishing technical assistance to school personnel and the Kiwanis Club are the Automobile Club of Southern California and Mobil Oil Company, co-organizers of the event. Special assistance will be provided by the California Highway Patrol and the Anaheim Police Department. "Because experience proves that the most economical driver tends also to be the safest driver, gasoline economy is the primary yardstick used in determining winners," Clark points out. "The penalty for..." Washington REPORT By Your Congressman JAMES B. UTT On George Washington's birthday, his Farewell Address was dutifully read in the House and in the Senate. Not more than 30 members of the House were in attendance. It seems to me that we should either abolish the reading of Washington's Farewell Address or require at least a majority attendance of the members. In our headlong rush toward socialism we have so completely departed from the warnings and admonitions handed down to us by the Father of our Country, that to read it as a guide to our deliberations is a complete farce. One of the most outstanding and frightening departures is from this paragraph: "The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is, in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation." Internationally we are so po- Special assistance will be provided by the California Highway Patrol and the Anaheim Police Department. "Because experience proves that the most economical driver tends also to be the safest driver, gasoline economy is the primary yardstick used in determining winners," Clark points out. "The penalty formula places additional emphasis on safety." A boy or girl, to enter the run, must be at least 16 years of age, hold a valid California driver's license and attend Anaheim Union or Western High School. In addition, they must drive cars belonging to themselves or to their immediate families. Mobil safe driving trophies will be presented to the first, second and third place winners in the ton-mileage classification and the first place actual miles per gallon winner for each school. The school which establishes the best over-all ton-mileage average will receive the sweepstakes trophy. Special categories for compact or imported cars may be established if enough entries are received. The course will be selected, logged and timed by the automobile club and the CHP, but will remain secret until a few days before the run. Each car entered will be subjected to a rigid safety inspection before it is allowed to compete. Illegal passing is one of the most dangerous traffic violations. Never pass on hills, curves or at intersections, or whenever there is a solid double line on the highway. But absence of a double line does not give you the right to pass. If there is any doubt as to safety stay in your own lane. One of the most outstanding and frightening departures is from this paragraph: "The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is, in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible... Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation." Internationally we are so politically embroiled with the affairs of practically every nation, that here is a question in my mind as to the possibility of survival. The United Nations has led us into paths of evil which are untenable. Instead of giving support to many of our allies, we have sided with their enemies and opened the gates of communism to take over countries and continents. We support the United Nations ideology of self-determination, provided, of course, that self-determination complies with our idea of what is best for someone else. May I ask, does not self-determination for the Congo include self-determination for Katanga—about the only civilized province of Congo? It is a hollow gesture to say that you can have self-determination provided you do and act exactly as I say. We join the United Nations in the condemnation of the assassination of Lumumba, but not one voice was raised against the assassination of Bang-Jensen, who refused to betray the freedom fighters of Hungary to the Soviet spy system within the United Nations. The press gave great comment to the brutal tactics used by South Africans to maintain order, but how much space has been given to the rape, murder and destruction of the white people, including missionaries, of the Congo? The true pattern of the New Frontier is taking shape. When one of the cabinet members was asked to explain President Kennedy's statement in his inaugural Address: "Ask not what your own lane." When one of the cabinet members was asked to explain President Kennedy's statement in his inaugural Address: "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country," his quick and suave reply was simply, "Pay taxes," and believe me that is just what you are going to do. The Administration's Social Security bills, which have been introduced, already amount to more than a five-billion annual tax dollar increase. The total price tag on the Administration's recovery program will exceed 12 billion dollars. Speaking of recovery, it is interesting to note that the Gross National Product for the last quarter of 1960 was $503 billion—less than one-half of one percent lower than the highest quarter in the history of the United States. Sheri Burns Wins Cinderella Crown Miss Sheri Burns of 900 N. Grafton Pl. was crowned Cinderella of 1961 at the annual Tri-Hi-Y Cinerella Ball, held recently at the Disneyland Hotel. Presenting Miss Burns with the crown was Mrs. Claud Sympson, president of the Anaheim High advisory committee and hostess for the festivities. ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS SFFERED BY AVIATION GROUP Orange County high school junior college students are needed to compete for two entering scholarships to the Drop Institute of Technolin Inglewood, to be awarded in Air Youth Day, March 25, the California Aviation Edunation Association, organizators president, Ralph D. Bent, announced this week. The scholarships have been available by President L. McKinley, Northrop, and include a four-year neering course leading to a color of science degree. Competition is open to students from high school and juncolleges throughout the State. The two winners, one from Southern and NorthCalifornia, will be judged on the basis of a written test, a short essay and scholastic achievement. Air Youth Day honors eligible students who have made exeptional progress in studies leading to aerospace careers. At this time they are given a tour of the industry, a flight in an airliner and tendered a banquet at which each student is presented with an Air Youth Day Award. Schools and/or students desirous of entry information pertaining to the Air Youth Day Scholarships are urged to contact Dr. C. Thomas Dean, Long Beach State College, or Ralph Bent, Northrop Institute of Technology, 1155 W. Arbor Vitae St., Inglewood (ORegon 8-4171, extension 17). Many State Income Taxpayers Can Use Card Form, Says Office Indications this week were that several hundred thousand taxpayers are going to work harder than they need to at filling out their 1960 state income tax returns, State Controller Alan Cranston has announced. Returns filed so far show that thousands of taxpayers are overlooking the short green card return, Form 540A, and instead are going to the unnecessary trouble of filling out the longer, more complicated Form 540. "Approximately one-third of those who have already mailed in the longer forms could have used the short card form," said Cranston. "The cards are designed for taxpayers whose in- and interest was less than come from wages, do 000. "They can be used to those who prefer to their deductions rather take the standard deduction about 10 percent for contributions, interests, taxes and medicapes." Sponsors Dance Reservations for the St. Patrick's Day dinner dance, sponsored by the Marywood High School Auxiliary, must be made with Mrs. Louis Benziger no later than Monday, it was announced this week. The annual event is scheduled for their use on the basis of returns filed last year. This year the state has printed the short form on a green card to make it easily distinguishable from the federal income tax card form. Some taxpayers confused the two cards last year and returned them to the wrong agencies. On St. Pat's Day uled at he Garden Grove Woman's Clubhouse, March 17.
