ATTITUDES TOWARD COMMUNISM OUTLINED TO COMMITTEE OF 150 Policies to be followed in the conduct of the Orange County School of Anti-Communism during the week of March 6-10 were explained to 150 committee members and guests at a meeting held at the Steak House of Knott's Berry Farm. Dr. William Brashears, chairman of the citizens committee to bring the school to Orange County, said that the school will be completely free from religious, racial or political prejudice of any kind, other than being anti-communism, and that attendance will be open to anyone interested in hearing explanations of what Communism is and how it operates. Highlight of the meeting was an address by Rev. Robert Schuller of the Garden Grove Community Church, chairman of the religion section of the committee. Schuller said there are several attitudes toward Communism in the community. One is that of the pro-Communist who seeks to convince people that the aims of Communism have changed; that Communists no longer seek world domination and have become "angels in disguise." This attitude, Schuller said, is completely false and tends to lull our people into complacency. The second attitude, he said, is the anti-Communism represented by those at the meeting in helping to promote the school of Anti-Communism in Orange County. These people are truly alarmed at the inroads being made by Communists in our midst; are anxious to do something about it, and are constructively working at it, he said. A third attitude—one he warned against—is that of the anti-anti-Communist. He said he is convinced that Communist agents secretly spark this group, sending out speakers posing as anti-Communists, but using this means of furthering their own ends. He cited instances in which Protestant ministers have received such violent anti-Negro, anti-Catholic and "anti-everything" literature through the mails, all carrying the label of anti-Communism, that many of them became anti-anti-Communists. They suspect everyone who is actually an anti-Communist. Four-Month School Art Course Opens Naomi Dietz, associate professor of art at Orange County State College, opened an upper division extension course in elementary school art at Orange Coast College yesterday. The two-unit course will continue Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. until June 7. The course is concerned with basic skills and understandings that enable the primary and elementary teacher to provide experiences for children. Topics include processes in printing, weaving, paper, paper mache, clay, puppets and puppetry, sketching and appliqué, and bookbinding. Before joining the OCSC faculty last fall, Miss Dietz was assistant professor of art at UCLA in charge of elementary art education. Earlier, she was with the Oregon System of Higher Education and taught at the University of Hawaii. She is editor of "Insight," the journal of the Southern California Art Association, and is on the editorial boards of the Pacific Art Association and the National Information Studies Committee.
