IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! VISIT THESE FIRMS THIS WEEK SHOULD BOMBS COME Blast, 'Dust' Survival Editor's Note—This is the second and last of two articles on the perils of fallout, and the protective measures that must be taken to survive a nuclear attack, prepared by the California Disaster Office. PART II You can provide a good shelter in your home from radioactive fallout by improving the shielding ability of what you have. The more solid substance you can put between you and the fallout dust, the better. Plan to be on the lowest floor, in the center of the building, away from windows. Large buildings, such as offices or apartment houses, offer good protection because it is hard for the radiation to get through thick, heavy masonry or concrete walls. Basements, inside rooms or corridors are the safest. If you eat or drink radioactive food or water, you may suffer damage. If fallout dust remains on your skin, you may be burned. Washing removes radioactive fallout from clothing and your person. Dispose of the water at a distance from public places, and from sources of drinking water. Food, Water Supply You might have to stay inside a shelter as long as two weeks. You should therefore provide your shelter, or specified place in your home, with a two-week emergency supply of food and water; first aid kit; flashlight with extra batteries; and portable radio with extra batteries. through its Radiological fence Division, has made California a national leader in field. More than 22,000 Californians have been trained in use of radiation meters. This would measure the radioactivity after a nuclear explosion. The Disaster Office also offers 105 radiological trainees through-out the state to repeat fallout information. Another mobile laboratories, self-contained units for emergent testing of food, water and for radiological contamination are available. Right now, equipment is used for the peak time radiation program. Governor Edmund G. Broyles says "I consider knowledge the facts about radioactive fallout a matter of urgent concern for every Californian. I urge you to arm yourself with these facts, take the necessary action." You should therefore provide your shelter, or specified place in your home, with a two-week emergency supply of food and water; first aid kit; flashlight with extra batteries; and portable radio with extra batteries. Food or water in closed containers is safe. Packages and bottles still intact are safe if you wash them carefully before opening. Boiling has no effect on radioactivity. What about decontamination outside? Don't go outside until authorities tell you over Conelrad or by direct contact that your area is safe. When you can, turn a hose on the roof and walls of your house. Wait for instructions. Caught on Road If you are caught on the road, your car (with windows and ventilators closed) is better than no protection. Tune radio to Conelrad (640 or 1240 kc) for instructions. If you are in open country, take the best cover you can find — barn, house, shed or other structure. How well prepared are we? At present, not well prepared at all. Most citizens don't know what radioactive fallout is, or what they can do to protect themselves. You can help by telling your friends, and neighbors, and distributing information at your club or church. See your local city or county office of civil defense for pamphlets and films. 22,000 Trained What about government? The California Disaster Office.
