PAUL WHITEMAN, dean of American jazz maestros, will appear on the Bell Telephone Hour's "Almanac for February" television show Friday, February 8, to conduct the Bell Telephone Orchestra in George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," with Jorge Bolet as piano soloist. Whiteman conducted the concert on February 12, 1924, at which the "Rhapsody" was first played, with Gershwin as soloist.
Eight top flight stars will turn their attention to four anniversary dates in music when the Bell Telephone Hour presents "Almanac for February" over NBC-TV, Friday, February 3.
Popular songstress Polly Bergen will host on the hour-long colorcast. Joining her will be veteran conductor Paul Whiteman, musical comedy star Carol Lawrence, Metropolitan Opera stars Roberta Peters and Theodor Uppman, TV singer Russell Arms, pianist Jorge Bolet, dancer Kelly Brown, and Donald Voorhees and the Bell Telephone Orchestra.
The four dates to be commemorated are Victor Herbert's birthday, February 1, the anniversary of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," February 12, Valentine's Day, February 14, and the anniversary of the first vaudeville show on February 23.
The Victor Herbert part of the program will be devoted to favorite songs from his operettas, presented by Roberta Peters and Theodor Uppman. Paul Whiteman, who conducted the first performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" with Gershwin as soloist, will lead the orchestra in an anniversary presentation, with Jorge Bolet as soloist.
Valentine's Day will be remembered by a group of popular love songs presented by
Polly Bergen and Russell Arms. Carol Lawrence and the entire cast will join in a selection of the music that came from the days of vaudeville.
"Huck" Hound Tells How to Fly a Kite
The expression "Go Fly a Kite" isn't an insult this time of the year—it's an invitation to lots of fun. But, like any other outdoor sport, it can best be enjoyed when played according to the rules.
This is what TV star Huckleberry Hound tells children in a free comic booklet the Southern California Edison Company is distributing.
Nearly, a half million copies of "Huckleberry Hound's Kite Fun Book" are being given to youngsters in schools and communities served by the electric power company, J. A. Long, Edison's Orange County district manager, said this week.
Huck tells his fans the basic rules for safe kite flying, including the good advice that no metal, wire, tsmile or metallic twine by used in the kite's frame, tail or string.
He also points out that these
