SUMNER NAMED HEAD OF JUDICIARY COMMITTEE Orange County's Assemblyman Bruce Sumner, of Newport Beach, this week was chosen as chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, considered one of the most important committees in the State Legislature. This is the first time in 10 years that the committee has been headed by a member whose political party did not control the Legislature. Sumner is a Republican. During the last regular session of the Legislature in 1959 the committee handled more than 10 percent of the bills introduced. In the current session the committee will be concerned with membership on the committee that deals with water, the committee that will work on the development of the University of California in Orange County (Ways and Means), and the committee that will actively work on the solution of our narcotics problem (Criminal Procedure), gives me the opportunity to work on the most pressing problems of my district. "The chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee is a particular challenge as this committee deals with all phases of the day-to-day problems of all the citizens of California." This is the first time in 10 years that the committee has been headed by a member whose political party did not control the Legislature. Sumner is a Republican. During the last regular session of the Legislature in 1959 the committee handled more than 10 percent of the bills introduced. In the current session the committee will be concerned with legislation in the field of trust deeds, as well as those applying to uniform security laws and the uniform commercial code. The group is also responsible for all judicial appointments. Commenting on his selection on this and other committees, Sumner said: "I am delighted with my committee appointments for I feel they will enable me to be of even greater service to Orange County.
