Fund Hits $262,000
As 1960 Drive Ends
Anaheim's United Fund reached a final total of $262,000 toward the goal set at $290,000 as fund officials prepared to close their books on the 1960 campaign. They did expect, however, that additional returns would bring the final total to near the $265,000 figure, for a percentage total of approximately 92%.
Joe Thompson, president of the fund this year, expressed his gratitude to all workers and contributors. He added that the cleanup work is now in progress in the various Barney Jordan, Bob Hutchin areas, under the leadership of son and Harold Smith, all veterans in United Fund work.
Fund officials said that volunteer workers are still continuing their efforts in the residential, shopping centers, professional and other divisions.
Jay DeDapper, general manager of the campaign this year, pointed out that the success of the drive this year has depended heavily on the share of the school administrator and a consultant to the National W College in cold war tacti heads the course.
The once-a-week series is being offered from 7 to 9 pm offering offered from 7 to 9 pm A-45. Registration is conducted in the classroom.

Fund officials said that volunteer workers are still continuing their efforts in the residential, shopping centers, professional and other divisions.
Jay DeDapper, general manager of the campaign this year, pointed out that the success of the drive this year has depended heavily on the share of the additional contributions secured from industry to meet the increasing demands of the participating agencies. The exploding population has created a problem with them and they are doing an excellent job to meet the challenge, DeDapper told his workers.
Outstanding support was also achieved this year from the Western Communities area of the fund. Cypress, Dairyland, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Stanton were included in the Anaheim United Fund this year. The people living in these areas were congratulated for carrying their share of the burden.
United Fund officials announced that an awards luncheon is being planned for mid-January, at which time outstanding volunteers will be recognized as well as 100% contributors.
Summer School Plans Studied

December Saw Record Use of Natural Gas
If you were wondering what kind of a new record, if any, was established in natural gas consumption during that cold wave last month, here's what the Southern Counties Gas Company had to say.
Gas sendout records tumbled first on Monday, December 5, when the Pacific Lighting system, which includes Southern California and Southern Counties Gas Cos., distributed 2.317 billion cubic feet of gas to both industrial and domestic customers.
Previous all-time high was 2.303 billion cubic feet distributed January 14, 1960.
The Monday record was short-lived however.

The committee, composed of district principals, Assistant Superintendent of Education George C. Williams and board member Earl Travers, has recommended the expansion of both remedial and rapid learning classes.
An increase in the number of curriculum areas introduced to advanced students and a course in U.S. History or California Geography were also suggested.
"We will expand our summer program with caution," Williams said, "so that we will be able to keep our operation financially sound. Since the district receives state funds only for the days the children actually attend, the average daily attendance must be kept to a maximum. Unlike regular session, no absence for illness can be credited in summer school."
The summer session will again be held at the Walter Knott School, because of its central location.

The Monday record was short-lived, however.
On Tuesday, when temperatures registered a 52-degree mean in the Los Angeles basin, the total Pacific Lighting sendout was 2.596 billion cubic feet.
The sendout on Wednesday was only slightly under this, reaching 2.533 billion cubic feet.
Consumption by domestic customers during the Tuesday record sendout was 1.722 billion cubic feet. Gas company officials pointed out this was roughly five times the consumption registered during a typical warm summer day in Southern California. Company officials emphasized that the three record figures were achieved without any curtailment of service to industrial gas customers.
In addition to Washington tape recordings, Dr. Peterson will include panel discussions, to which the general public will be invited to join class members.
The first panel will include pepole who have been refugees from Communism. In February, there will be fighters against U.S. Communism, including law enforcement officers and undercover agents.
Among lecture topics will be "Communist Party Takes Over Russian Government," "Infiltration Into American Institutions," "Propaganda Attacks in Free Countries" and "What Russia and the Slave States are Like Today."
Persons who know of people living in Southern California who have had experience in Russia or China, or in countries now under Communistic tyranny, or who have helped resist Communistic subversion are asked to communicate with Dr. Peterson at 2002 Monte Vista Ave., Santa Ana, KI 3-8037.

LAW IN ACTION
TELL ALL
Tell your lawyer as much as you can think of about your legal problem. He is sworn to keep it a secret. The law and his profession also call upon him to keep the secret unless you give him permission to tell, or you yourself break the confidence by telling others. A secret has two ends. Yours and your lawyer's.
Why does the law thus protect your secrets? For justice to prevail, you need counsel: You have to be free to tell him things without fear of revelation, or he cannot give you advice on your troubles, or protect your interests in court. You could not get a fair trial unless he knows the facts, to know how to guard your interests. This is why your lawyer may question you closely. One seemingly trivial fact may make the difference.
Thus, suppose you think the paint job on your house cost too much, you refused to pay, and the contractor sues. But suppose also before he sued, you had asked him not to cut the price, but for more time to pay. By this request, you may have "acknowledged" the debt, and you may have to pay the bill in full. Your lawyer must know such things to advise you.
Another case: Suppose you stumbled and fell over a crack in a sidewalk. You sue. But suppose you have walked that way time and again and knew about the crack. Then you know of the hazard and yet do not avoid it. You help bring on your injuries. Such "contributory negligence" could change the nature of your whole case. When your lawyer asks you about such things, tell him all.
One exception: a lawyer is duty bound to prevent a crime and to protect the prospective victims, even though he hears about the plan to do it from a client or would-be client.
