Eisenhower Lauds YMCA For Armed Forces Aid President Eisenhower lauded the Young Men's Christian Association for its work on behalf of America's Armed Forces, declaring this service to be a major contribution to national security. This information was received by William E. Fricker, president of the Anaheim YMCA from the organization's national headquarters. "By advancing the physical and moral strength of men and women in uniform," the President asserted, "the YMCA helps to ensure a continuance of our way of life and a full measure of individual freedom." The President's views were expressed in a congratulatory letter addressed to the Nation- Armed Services Branches at home and overseas, operates 35 USO Clubs and Lounges, and furnishes personnel now directing recreational and welfare activities for United Nations troops in the Gaza Strip and the Congo. The President's views were expressed in a congratulatory letter addressed to the National Board of YMCAs on the eve of the Association's 100th anniversary of service to the nation's fighting men. The YMCA movement will commemorate this anniversary throughout the country in 1961. Fricker noted that the Y's armed services work began in 1861, when a group of local YMCAs formed the United States Christian Commission. The Commission sent 4,859 volunteers to battlefields, hospitals and camps in an effort to provide spiritual and physical relief to Union and Confederate soldiers. In so doing, the YMCA established the pattern for all civilian service to the Armed Forces. Subsequently, Fricker said, the YMCA directed practically all volunteer services for troops in the Spanish-American War, handled nine-tenths of all welfare work in World War I, and operated a quarter of all American-based USO Clubs during World War II and the Korean conflict. The Y also provided spiritual, educational and recreational services to millions of prisoners-of-war in more than 30 countries. 24 Service Ys The American YMCA Movement currently maintains 24 Armed Services Branches at home and overseas, operates 35 USO Clubs and Lounges, and furnishes personnel now directing recreational and welfare activities for United Nations troops in the Gaza Strip and the Congo. Fricker also pointed out that, during the past year, civilians working in YMCA Armored Services facilities gave more than 112,000 days of volunteer service to members of the Armed Services. In addition, more than 1000 local YMCAs provide a wide variety of social, educational and non-denominational religious services to military personnel in their regular programs. The centennial anniversary will be marked by a year-long series of community, regional and national events honoring the many thousands of volunteers involved in this service, from the Civil War to the present day. Because of this, 11 needy families will be able to have a merry Christmas this year that would have otherwise been denied them. It all started when a few employees at the Kwikset division of the American Hardware Corporation, 516 E. Santa Ana St., decided that money spent for exchanging cards among themselves could be used for a better Yuletide pose. Because they see each other almost every day of the year, they reasoned, a cheery "Merry Christmas" would be just as appreciated as cards. But what, they wondered, about the families who will not be able to have a Merry Christmas? The families with many children and not enough money to be able to celebrate this most sacred holiday? So, they decided the Christmas card money could be better spent. First, a steering committee was organized to formulate plan. It asked all employee submit names of families children who appeared to destitute. These were all investigated, to determine extent of need and the number of children and their ages. Eleven separate committees were appointed, composed mostly of members of international company departments. Each of these committees assigned a family as its sponsibility. Meanwhile, the drive money, clothing and toys on. The steering committee loted funds and clothing each department proportionate to the size of family it was sponsible for.
