Henry Kuchel, 1859-1935 Henry Kuchel, who learned his printer’s trade in San Francisco and Los Angeles, returned to his home town of Anaheim to buy the “Anaheim Gazette” and gave Southern California’s second oldest newspaper 48 years of vigorous and personalized editorship until his leath in 1935. The Kuchel family entered the ownership of the “Gazette” in 1870 and still continues in the publishing of this newspaper. Blindness did not deter Kuchel from prolific writing. His wife took his dictation and has retained many of the handwritten manuscripts. His two sons read constantly to their father, one being Theodore (Ted) Kuchel, who has carried on the family newspaper, and the other United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel. As a boy of 11, Henry Kuchel helped roll the old hand press for the first issues of the “Gazette” after October 29, 1870, and delivered the first papers. He bought the paper from his brother-in-law, Richard Melrose, in partnership with his younger brother, Charles Kuchel. He bought out the latter in 1897. He learned to set type in the “Gazette” office, and at 16 set out to see the world as a printer. He variously wrote sports and set type on the “San Francisco Chronicle,” knew William Randolph Hearst while working on the “San Francisco Examiner,” set type in San Diego and Escondido, then served as composing room foreman for General Harrison Gray Otis on the then young “Los Angeles Times” after 1881. He never did learn to keep his mouth shut when he thought something should be changed and never cared whom he told. He never did learn to keep his mouth shut when he thought something should be changed and never cared whom he told. He was interested in the truth and its dissemination, with the result that what went on in the little town of Anaheim became of wider interest through the extensive circulation to state and national figures in politics, journalism and civic affairs. It was largely through Kuchel's campaigns that a third attempt to form Orange County was ratified by the Legislature and voters in 1889. He was threatened with libel suits as he fought successfully all the way to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of orange growers opposing paying royalties on a patented process of night fumigation. He was a militant defender of water rights, a controversial subject in the early years. City and Paper Grow As Anaheim grew, so did the stature of the "Gazette" and editor Kuchel. Politicians, national figures and the famous came to visit the blind country editor. He entered vigorously into political campaigns, being a staunch Republican. The "Gazette" was founded 11 years after hardy colonists from San Francisco set out their grape vineyards. The hand-operated Hoe press and type came around the Horn in 1871 and was destroyed by a fire in 1877, causing the paper to miss its only two editions. Kuchel installed a drum cylinder press and later brought the first linotype to Orange County. The "Gazette" came out as a weekly, except for two years as a daily (1875 to 1877) and again as a daily for a period in 1950. The paper survived hard times—like the years when blight destroyed the vineyards—and encouraged a shift in economy to walnuts, grain, later citrus, and more recently industry. Here Since 1860 Henry Kuchel was born June 11, 1859, in San Francisco, the son of an immigrant German mechanical engineer, Conrad Kuchel. The family came to Anaheim in 1860 and owned 20 acres of vineyard where the "Gazette" building is located in downtown Anaheim. He was married in 1896 to Miss Lutitia Bailey, whose family came to Anaheim from Texas in 1876. She was active on the paper during Kuchel's editorship and has continued as a historical columnist in recent years. Kuchel was a handsome tall man, an incessant cigar smoker, and eloquent and meticulous in his speech as the result of his diligent self-education after grade school. He was quick to appreciate radio because it kept him in touch with news of the world. He continued in good health and vitally interested in where the "Gazette" building is located in downtown Anaheim. His remarkable memory enabled Kuchel to walk confidently around his newspaper plant and downtown. His acquaintance with early events and Mrs. Kuchel's active delving into the files produced valuable historical articles. Every press night brought a crowd to the "Gazette" office to read "hot off the press" what Editor Kuchel had written that week about Anaheim, the State and the Nation.
