A DAY OF THANKSGIVING
It was eleven days after the repulse of Lee at Gettysburg.
It was three days after Meade, the victorious but hesitant victor, had allowed Lee to slip away with his beaten army, and Abraham Lincoln sadly said:
"Our army held the war in the hollow of their hand, and they would not close it. We had gone through all the labor of tilling and planting an enormous crop, and when it was ripe we did not harvest it."
It was July 15, 1863.
For the first time in United States history, on that day, there was issued from the White House a Presidential Proclamation for a day of thanksgiving by the American people.
The President's proclamation touched cautiously on past victories which furnished "reasonable grounds for augmented confidence," and reviewed "sacrifices of life, limb, health and liberty" and "fearful bereavements." Then it declared:
"It is meet and right to recognize and confess the presence of the Almighty Father, and the power of his hand equally in these triumphs and in these sorrows."
Almost a full century of historic years for America—many with their high triumphs and their sorrows as well—has passed since the day of Lincoln's first call to national thanksgiving.

Almost a full century of historic years for America—many with their high triumphs and their sorrows as well—has passed since the day of Lincoln's first call to national thanksgiving.
We have come to an establishment of the day, from the White House to the humblest dwelling in the land, as "meet and right" for all Americans.
As always, in this year of 1960, let us give thanks.
College Entrance Examinations Slated for Chapman Newcomers
Chapman College has been elected to membership in the College Entrance Examination Board, it was announced today.
The board is composed of some 350 institutions of higher learning which together enroll more than half of the country's college students.
"Board membership will make a significant contribution to the academic program of Chapman," said Dr. George T. Tade, dean of the college and the school's voting member on the board.
All incoming freshmen will now be required to take the board's Scholastic Aptitude Test and since this test is scored on the basis of national norms, we will be able to measure much more accurately each student's ability and potential," Dean Tabe said.

Board of Supervisors,
County of Orange,
Santa Ana, California
Gentlemen:
We oppose the 1500-foot traffic pattern altitude for the Orange County Airport. In our opinion, the Supervisors, not being pilots, are unaware that a law restricting pilots, especially student pilots, to this altitude could result in far more accidents over housing areas and beaches than have ever occurred before.
Therefore, before this law is passed we request the Supervisors test this proposed law by flying over the Orange County Airport at the proposed altitude and observe the danger of trying to climb to 1500 feet while maintaining the present required pattern.
In order for slower aircraft to obey this law requiring a higher altitude it would be necessary to extend their flight pattern over the beach area and the Lighter-Than-Air Base.
We request a hearing be held on this matter and the opinion of experienced and student pilots, be considered before a decision is made.
Yours truly,
Connie C. Chandler,
President

Apprentice petty officers are chosen from the ranks of the seaman recruits to assist company commanders. The selection is based on individual aptitudes and leadership qualities.
Marine Pfc. Joseph P. Bourassa, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Bourassa of 2730 W. Ball Rd., Anaheim, is serving with the First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, which is participating in a huge amphibious operation, known as Exercise "Pack Mule," off the coast of California.
Navy and Marine units totaling 41 ships and 15,000 men are involved in the operation.
Highlights of the involved operation include an actual landing by a crack Marine battalion against a mock-missile installation on San Clemente Island; laying and use of an underwater wire telephone system; and the installation and use of a special system to facilitate the delivery of fuel directly from tankers to the forces on the beach.
The farmer's share of the food dollar in 1959 was 38%, down from 40% in 1940, 53% in 1945.
