District Librarian Is Guest at Annual Literary Awards Banquet Mrs. Helen Riesterer, Centralia district librarian, was a guest of the Follett Publishing Company at a special dinner party honoring Mrs. Shirley L. Arora, winner of a gold medal award for children's literature. Mrs. Arora's book, entitled "What Then, Raman?", is considered an excellent contribution to children's literature. "The absorbing book, Mrs. Arora's first, depicts India as Mrs. Arora came to know it," Mrs. Riesterer said. "It was very different from the India I had read about before going there to live." Mrs. Riesterer quoted the author as saying. The author has lived all her life in Southern California with the exception of four years spent in India. The award dinner, held Monday night in the Statler Hilton in Los Angeles, is an annual affair. The Charles W. Follett Award is given for books of both high literary quality and spirited action, that appeal to the young reader, give him pleasure, and instill a love of good reading. Its purpose is to stimulate interest in literature. Beverage License Fees Return to City Government Residents of Anaheim are probably unaware of the fact that the annual license fees paid by the beer taverns and package store owners to the State Board of Equalization are returned to the local treasury. These comparatively large sums of money are used for the many branches of services offered by our local government. For the six-month period ending Feb. 29, 1960, Anaheim received $23,879 in return license fees from the department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Orange County as a whole received $152,885. A package store beer and wine license costs the owner $31 per year, while a general tavern license costs $6,000. A beer and wine only tavern license costs $163 per year. SAC Students Hear Psychology Expert Lecture Dr. Roy K. Heintz, psychology professor from Long Beach State College, spoke on the "Facts and Fallacies of Hypnosis" to Santa Ana College psychology students, one of a series of guest lecturers on the SAC campus. Dr. Heintz has been at LBSC the past four years after previous faculty service at the University of Maryland and University of Pennsylvania. The talk was arranged by SAC instructor Frank B. Black. Public Library Has 2nd Book Review The Anaheim Public Library presented Mrs. Mary G. Scarborough in the second book review of the season on Wednesday in the library reading room at 241 S. Los Angeles St. Books discussed were "Timothy Dexter Revisited" by John Marquard, "Taken at the Flood" by John Gunther, "The Waste Makers" by Vance Packard, "Tht Public Years" by Bernard M. Its purpose is to stimulate interest in literature for children among established authors, and to discover new writers. Among the 100 invited guests at the affair were three librarians from Orange County, Mrs. Riesterer; Mrs. Mary Knorr, La Habra, and Mrs. Dora Kimball, Seal Beach.
