Anaheim Makes Plans for Annual Halloween Festival October 29
Anaheim's 37th Hallowe'en Festival plans are well under way. Committee chairmen met at the Chamber of Commerce with Festival Chairman "Al" Marcoux. The parade will be held Saturday, Oct. 29. The theme is "Our Home Town."
Equestrian chairman is Gale Harmon; band chairman, Theron Jackman; breakfast chairman, Warren Broad; kiddies' parade, Bob Shanks assisted by Eldon Tauck.
Howard Loudon, Classic Beard Contest chairman, will promote one of the most unique contests ever held in Anaheim. Plans call for men to grow beards. This contest will be judged at the Saturday morning Hallowe'en Breakfast as part of the entertainment.
Orange shirts and unusual costumes will be worn on the streets by business people a week before the parade.
Bob Shanks says he is planning for a bigger and better kiddies' parade this year. This parade is to be held on Friday afternoon and Shanks says he expects about 5,000 participants in the colorful event this year.
The annual Hallowe'en Parade, with pre-parade events, has come to be Anaheim's most widely publicized event and one which brings all Anaheimers together as one big happy family.
The downtown merchants will feature a "Sidewalk Bazaar" all day Friday and Saturday, as announced by Chairman Ken Golbrecht. This will include kiddies' rides, food booths, exhibits and entertainment.
Local Award Winner Named at L. A. Fair
Local award winner in the photography competition at the Los Angeles County Fair was Robert D. Routh, 842 S. Helena St., Anaheim, a silver medal for "Design in Bark," a nature color slide, according to a release by the Fair management.
Judges have selected more than 150 color and black and white prints and 1,000 color slides for the fourth annual International Exhibition of Photography at the Fair Sept. 16 through Oct. 2. "It is the finest selection of pictures in the fair's history," according to Burton Frasher Jr., director of the photo exhibit.
Orientation Held For New Teachers
A group of 95 teachers who are joining the staffs of the Fullerton Union High School and Juniper College Districts met Wednesday Sept. 7, in the District Education Center in one of a series of private school orientation meetings.
Welcomed to the districts is Dr. Ernest G. Lake, district superintendent of schools, the new teachers were told that the communities served by our school want superior schools and have consistently over the years provided the needed support.
"Nearly one-third of the gifted students in Orange County are enrolled in our high school," Lake pointed out. "Our Board of Trustees has provided adequate buildings and teaching materials to meet the needs of all our students and expects a quality teaching job in every classroom."
The superintendent also stressed the cooperative attitude parents and their support through active parent-teacher associations groups on each high school campus. He urged new teachers assume an active role in community activities, sharing their special talents for community progress and improvements.
"You are now members of professional staff of 530 teachers in these districts serving so many 7,000 high school students and other 6,500 junior college students. We wish you every success during the coming year and devote our efforts to assure..."
