Anaheim Gazette-A3 (Anaheim, Thursday, Sep. 15, 1900) Our Service Men News About MEDITERRANEAN (FHTNC) While on a one-month summer training cruise aboard the destroyer USS John W. Weeks, in the Eastern Mediterranean, Midshipman First Class Gus L. Keoilanui, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Pitteneender of 12292 Orangewood Ave., Anaheim, stood quarterdeck watch in port. He is a member of the class of 1961 at the Naval Academy. The midshipman boarded the Weeks June 25 at Golfo de Palmas, Sardinia. During the cruise, they received practical "at sea" experience in seamanship, engineering and gunnery, to help prepare them for Naval commissions upon graduation. Before flying back to the U.S. from Nice, France, July 22, they visited Guife Juan on the French Riviera. WESTERN PACIFIC (FHTNC) John R. Prins, machinist's mate fireman, USN, son of Mr., and Mrs. John R. Prins of 424 Janss, Anaheim, and Paul R. Baalke, sonarman third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gail E. Baalke of 2169 W. Broadway, Anaheim, are serving aboard the destroyer USS Boyd operating with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. Lieutenant Commander John G. Weber, 8806 Ball Rd., Anaheim, and Chief Aviation Mechanic George C. Jenkinson, 841 S. Loara St., Anaheim, members of Jet Fighter Squadron VF 776, return ed recently from annual training duty at Alameda Naval Air Station. The home base for Squadron VF 776 is Naval Air Station Los Alamitos where drills are held one weekend each month. In civilian life Weber is an ordnance engineer at the Naval Ordnanct Laboratory in Corona. Jenkinson is a teacher in the Westminster School District. WERTHEIM, Germany (AHT NC)—Steven C. Goetting, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin L. Goetting, 1844 Haster St., Anaheim, recently was promoted to specialist four in Germany where he is a member of the 99th Transportation Detachment. Specialist Goetting, a helicopter repairman, in the detachment in Wertheim, entered the Army in February 1959 and received basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., before arriving overseas last April. Goetting attended Garden Grove Union High School. FORT MYER, Va. (AHTNC)—Army Pvt. Harold D. Andrews, 24, whose mother, Mrs. Dorthea H. Wertheim, entered the Army in February 1959 and received basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., before arriving overseas last April. Gbétting attended Garden Grove Union High School. FORT MYER, Va. (AHTNC)—Army Pvt. Harold D. Andrews, 24, whose mother, Mrs. Dorthea H. McInire, lives at 206 Cherrie St., Anaheim, recently completed the bandsman's course at the Naval School of Music near here. Andrews entered the Army in January of this year and received basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. He is a 1953 graduate of Anaheim High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles. MAYPORT, Fla. (FHTNC)—David G. Spencer, nuclear weaponsman seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Spencer of 2652 Glencrest Ave., Anaheim, and Michael B. Browning, nuclear weaponsman third class, USN, son of Mrs. Lois C. Browning of 2107 Chateau Ave., Anaheim, returned here Sept. 1 aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Franklin D, Roosevelt. The Roosevelt completed a six-month tour with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. CAMP PENDLETON (FHT NC)—Marine Sgt. Daniel H. Andes of 121 Vine St., Anaheim, departed for Okinawa Aug. 24 as a member of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Rigiment from here. The battalion, due to arrive at Okinawa Sept. 10, will be part of the 5th Marine Regiment under the Marine Corps unit transplacement program.
