LB Hosts World Softball Series
State champion softball teams, including teams from Canada, Mexico and Hawaii, are prepping for the 1960 World Softball Championship, scheduled for Long Beach Aug. 27 to Sept. 5.
The Long Beach Nitehawks, world champions for five consecutive years, are still considered as "the team to beat."
All games will be held in Park Avenue Field, starting nightly at 6 p.m. for the 10-day world series play-offs.
Tickets are available at the gate or reserved seat books may be purchased by calling the Park Avenue Field, beginning Aug. 20.
Colorful Foliage Ideal for Garden
Color is the main goal of every gardener and achieving it affords him no little satisfaction. But all too often, the gardener relies on bloom alone to attain his goal, paying scant heed to the numerous possibilities for using colorful foliage.
If you are guilty of such tactics, the California Association of Nurserymen has a word for you. Nurseries point out that while bloom may be satisfying in itself, it can be much more so in combination with foliage color. And the color that derives from foliage is more permanent.
Rural CD A
Residents of rural America's 5,000,000 farms are being urged by civil defense officials to plan now for their safety from nuclear attack as they consider ordinary hazards during Farm Safety Week, July 24-30.
Leo A. Hoegh, director of the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, points out that "the safety of the nation depends upon our farmers being prepared not only to reduce their human and property losses through accidents. They also should take the necessary steps to insure that if an enemy ever attacks us we clear, biological, or chemical weapons, our farmers know how to survive, re-arm and produce the food and products upon which we would depend."
A broad rural public information program is now underway in 3,000 counties. It stresses relatively simple methods which people can develop own self-protection against fallout hazard of a nuclear attack—the principal threat to people who live in rural areas.

Thomas Wrigrt To Attend Cal Poly
New residence halls on the California State Polytechnic College campus, San Luis Obispo, will be open to students for the first time this fall and residing in one of the new air-conditioned buildings will be Thomas Carl Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Wright, 1156 Hermosa Dr., Anaheim.
The new student will major in electronic engineering at Cal Poly.
With 1925 new students expected to register this fall, college officials anticipate the few remaining on-campus dormitory vacancies to be filled shortly. A total of 4600 students is expected to register in the three divisions of the college—Engineering, Agriculture and Arts and Sciences.
Sept. 1 is the last day to file applications for admission to Cal Poly. Registrations and scheduling of classes will be held Sept. 24 with classes beginning Sept. 26.

enemy ever attacks us with nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons, our farmers would know how to survive, recover, and produce the food and other products upon which victory would depend.4
A broad rural public information program is now underway in 3,000 counties. It stresses the relatively simple methods by which people can develop their own self-protection against the fallout hazard of a nuclear attack—the principal threat to people who live in rural areas.
Family fallout shelters are urged as the least expensive and most effective means of saving the greatest number of people from a nuclear attack. Shelters would be highly effective to protect families against tornadoes. All shelters should be equipped with a two-week supply of food and water, a battery radio, first aid kit, flashlights, bedding and other survival items, according to OCDM.
Family fallout shelters cost as little as $150.00 when constructed on a do-it-yourself basis. When built by contractors, the cost ranges from $800.00 upwards.
Precautionary reinforcement of berns and outbuildings can lessen the hazards of fallout on livestock. The more massive the materials between livestock and fallout, the less radiation will come through to injure or kill the animals. Steel and concrete are good shielding materials from fallout. Earth costs nothing and also is effective for shielding. Even bales of straw or wood, if thick enough, can keep out most radiation.
Detailed information on shelters, treatment of fallout-contaminated soils, what fallout-contaminated foods could be eaten and how they should be prepared, and other survival information is now available to rural Americans through public meetings sponsored by county civil defense directors. Printed material also is available from county directors or by writing to the OCDM Rural Activities Office, Battle Creek, Mich.
Shelter for live stock for protection against fallout was improvised in this barn by using bales of straw as a shield against potentially deadly "post-attack" radiation. Heavy concrete walls, with straw shredding windows, would protect livestock in pens on the barn's lower floor. Barn's upper floor trusses would be covered four bales deep directly above the pens. A shielded room for car-takers, and tractor powertrain feed grinder and automatic feeder complete the shelter.

SHOE LACES
By IDA M. RANNOW
1525 S. Euclid Ave., Anaheim
A pair of long shoe laces
From an attic trunk were hauled,
Made thoughts return to places.
Such as seldom were recalled.
Brings to mind so long ago,
When to duty you were bound
And the night did swiftly flow.
While you slept so sweet and sound.
The crash of an alarm clock
Upset your little dream boat
Long before you reached the dock
Left you stranded and afloat.
But reality returned
You find there's no time to lose,
Why are you so much concerned?
Speed, to lace those high top shoes.
Metal points through eyelets poke,
Cross them over and repeat,
To reach the top seems a joke
And the big job is complete.
But off came one metal tip,
The end frayed into a brush,
Twas hard through eyelet to slip,
Matters not how great the rush.
There is a weak spot growing
In your lace so very strong.
You jerk hard without knowing
And pop, goes the mighty thong.
Laces you have in reserve,
The last trip you made to town.
This helps to quiet your nerve.
But black and white, these are brown.
In despair a knot you tie,
Pushing under not to show,
Time is fleeting ever by,
You must hurry now and go.
Volunteers Needed For Naval Program
The Anaheim Navy Recruiters, who are the local area Navy recruiters, announced today that more volunteers are needed for the Navy basic electronics school. High school graduates may qualify for this program under the Navy's high school program.
Under this program, the high school graduate who qualifies can enlist in the Navy with the designated "Electronics Field Seaman Recruit." After the completion of nine weeks of indoctrination and basic training, guidance and classification, they are assigned to the Navy Electronics Technical School.
