Lovely blonde and green-eyed Jeannie Blackstone, 20, model and former Miss Daytona Beach, today was named Queen of the 1960 Los Angeles Home Show at the Memorial Sports Arena Aug. 4-14.
Jeannie, who was born in Shanghai and has traveled with her missionary father from Hong Kong to Florida, is now a Betty Ames Charm Center model. She has recorded on Capitol label, appeared in TV shows and panel discussions, flew as an air hostess for one year, and even drove a Heist truck for a publicity campaign.
This year's Home Show at the Sport Arena will boast a gala stage show headed by George Gobel, three model homes and mobile equipment, a flower show, decorator rooms and many interesting exhibits representing the entire building and construction industry.
U. S. Contst Boom
Contests are taking the country by storm and it is anticipated that six hundred thousand "typically average people" will win prizes this year in a series of contests that have become big business in the U.S.
Almost every leading corporation in the country has adopted the idea in hopes of creating sales, building store traffic, or calling attention to a company or its products.
These corporations are offering $50 million in prizes this year and are spending another $500 million for advertising and promotion to lure the widest possible audience. The idea behind the contest is to get the greatest possible number of entrants.
The average winner of a contest is a housewife 30 years old or older who is enticed to enter the contest by the prize which is usually beyond her financial reach.

Industries Listed In New Directory
A new directory of Orange County Industries has just been released by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County. It lists industries located in all parts of the county including 27 separate communities.
The publication, over a year in production, is believed to be the most complete listing of its kind ever produced. Included are the firm name, address, telephone number, contact person, number of employees and products or services rendered.
According to Chas. A. Pearson president of the Associated Chambers, "We know the directory fills the need for a straight listing of our many Orange County industries of which we are justifiably proud. We believe it will do an excellent job of helping to utilize more of our locally produced products not only within Orange County but throughout the world."
Copies of he directory may be purchased for a nominal cost at the offices of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, 2184 Harbor Blvd., Anaheim.

1. Keep feeding and watering chrysanthemums. Stake tall growers now before they grow themselves out of shape.
2. August is an active month for lawn moths. Watch for brown spots in well watered lawns that shouldn't have them. Run for the insecticide if the spots or moth larvae show up.
3. You can start planting winter sweet peas this month. Dig a deep trench and layer six inches of manure in the bottom before adding soil and seed.
4. Brighten your garden with gallon cans of yellow marguerite and blue aster frikarti. There's no quicker way to plenty of color.
5. For fall color, now is the time to put in bedding plants. Your C.A.N. nurseryman has a fine selection.

Hawaiian Exhibit
The Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum announces a special exhibit of Hawaiian Arts and Crafts in honor of Hawaii's admission as our 50th state. The showing consists of wood carvings, paintings and drawings done by boys and girls of Kamehameha schools in Honolulu. They are shown here by special arrangement with the schools.
The Kamehameha Schools overlooking the city of Honolulu are unique in their inheritance, development and purposes. Kahehameha emphasizes the dignity of work, the mastery of skills, the significance of Hawaiian culture, the desirability of good speech, and the genuine worth of spiritual training.
The schools are the direct and sole beneficiary of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate. She was the last of the Kamehameha dynasty.
Kamehameha is the only school in the Islands where Hawaiian ancestry is an entrance requirement.

Growers Want Imitation Bubbles For Local Wines
The National Assn. of Wine Growers has asked Congress to revise legislation to permit vintners to put "artificial bubbles" in sparkling wines.
Carbon dioxide is credited for the sparkling bubbles in burgundy and champagne. However, under the law, this carbon dioxide must be formed naturally through a costly fermentation process.
For over 20 years wine makers have known an inexpensive method of artificially fermenting carbon dioxide bubbles in still wines. They want the current law revised to allow unlimited amount of carbon dioxide pressure in wine bottles and repeal of the extra tax levied on sparkling wines.
Reports indicate that sparkling wines are taxed $7 a case more than still wines.

Martin Lefcort, president of Chateau Martin Wines and treasurer of the National Assn. of Wine Growers believes that combining the two factors — inexpensive sparkling, flavored wines — would find a tremendous market in the U.S.
The market for all wines in the U.S. has increased from 30 million bottles in 1933 to 150 million bottles last year.
