Wide Gap in Boating and Auto Mishaps Chances of winding up in court in an accident case are 10 times less for power boat operators than for automobile drivers, according to Commerce Clearing House, national reporting authority on tax and business law. In proportion to the total number of boats and cars in use, a study of accident litigation winding up in higher state and federal courts across the nation during the past 10 years, CCH editors found only 100 cases involving the operation of pleasure craft, compared to 15,000 auto cases for the same period. Of the 4 million-plus power boats skimming the surface of America's lakes and rivers, only one in every 40,000 was involved in an accident sufficiently complex to reach an appellate court. On the other hand, there are nearly 60 million passenger cars roaming the streets and highways. One in about every 4,000 gets mixed up in an accident that reaches a high court, noted the review of cases published in CCH Insurance Law Reports. The rapid growth of boating as a national pastime has brought the soaring water-surface traffic. The laws vary from state to state, generally providing boating-safety guidelines. Violators not only may find themselves in personal danger, but subject to heavy penalties as well, the CCH report said. Poultrymen Combat Flies Simple Way A simple but effective new idea in fly control is helping California poultrymen stay in business and is also aiding suburban residents pestered by flies from chicken ranches. The idea is to use chickens themselves to control the flies that are caused by chickens. The system is both cheap and simple. Here's how it works: A rancher acquires male chicks, usually free, from hatcheries which normally discard the unproductive birds. He raises the chicks in a brooder, inoculates them against disease, then releases them under the cages. The cockeels clean up larvae and pupee that would otherwise grow. On the other hand, there are nearly 60 million passenger cars roaming the streets and highways. Colorful Catalina Bird Sanctuary Recommended as Summer Attraction Catalina Island's phenomenal resurgence this year, as a nation-wide magnet for tourists and family visitors, is due in no little part to the antics of the feathered "characters" in the island's famous Bird-Park. Though only a few hours from the mainland via the newly-comissioned Big White Ship, the S.S. Catalina, this unique bird sanctuary seems thousands of miles away, like on another continent. Exotic and colorful birds from all over the earth have been collected and installed in natural habitat backgrounds in the Bird Park. Attendants report that normally shy species take on actor-like characteristics under the delighted attention of island visitors, and "ham it up" like seasoned scene stealers. Entrance to the Bird-Park nominal, and it is thronged by families enchanted with performance of the feathery "showmen." The Bird Park features largest aviary in the world, enormous flying cage which is totally a nenclosed park in it. Huge trees and a miniature for waterfowl fit easily, and conspicuously in the giant aviary. Bird "conversation," rang from the flute-like songs thrushes and warblers, to harsh cacophony of ducks, eagles and hawks, features the d show in the Bird-Park. Visitors are not infrequent startled by the all-but-human of the Indian bill mynahs and various species of parrots in Catalina's feathered wonderland.
