IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! VISIT THESE FIRMS THIS WEEK (Anaheim, Thursday, July 7, 1960) Anaheim Gazette-A3 Novice Gardener Can Raise Roses Even a novice gardener can raise beautiful roses by following a simple program of regular garden care. Roses need a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of sunshine per day. The more sunshine they can receive the better. The morning sunshine helps dry dew on foliage and prevents certain leaf diseases that are brought on by excessive moisture. Good drainage can be provided by installing tile about 18 to 20 inches below the soil surface. A fertilizer with a ratio of 4-12-4 is suggested. The first application should be made when spring growth is well established and all danger of freezing is past. A second application should be made if plants show signs of deficiency later on. CHP Captain Tells Trailer Pointers Captain F. E. Winchell, commander of the California Highway Patrol's Anaheim area, cautions boat owners who tow their boats over public roads to be sure they have the proper turn signals and other safety requirements on their cars and trailers. California law requires trailers carrying loads that extend 24 inches or more to the left of the center of the steering wheel of the towing vehicle be equipped with either signal lamps or an approved mechanical signal device. Other equipment required on trailers includes one red tail lamp, a license plate lamp, a red reflector and a stop lamp. Two tail lamps and two stop lamps are required on trailers first registered after Jan. 1, 1958. In addition, the towing vehicle must be Good drainage can be provided by installing tile about 18 to 20 inches below the soil surface. A fertilizer with a ratio of 4-12-4 is suggested. The first application should be made when spring growth is well established and all danger of freezing is past. A second application should be made if plants show signs of deficiency later on. It is preferable to fertilize just before a rain or prior to watering the rose bed. Contrary to popular belief, roses do not need heavy application of fertilizer. You can keep your roses free of insects and disease by regular spraying and dusting. All that is needed to get this care program under way is a small sprayer and a few basic insecticides and fungicides. Roses require large amounts of water. The best method of watering roses is to apply water in a small stream from a hose. The slow moving water will seep into the soil and wet it thoroughly. They offer a choice of a rainbow of bold colors, in a variety of forms and sizes, and produce beautiful flowers with a very minimum of care. Choose from shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, bronze, pink or white. Choose small round pompons or large 4-inch decorates. Whatever your desire, there probably is a variety of chrysanthemums to fulfill it. Chrysanthemums should be in full sunshine all days. A southern exposure is ideal for them. Soil should be fertile and well drained. If plants appear to need water, a slow stream of water should be applied to moisten but not soak the soil. Chrysanthemums should never be allowed to wilt. Northern Counties Gas Co. Hosts Specials Through New Plant Gardener's Check List By the California Association of Nurserymen 1. In July, watering is of paramount importance in the garden. The C.A.N. says that to be effective water must penetrate to the depth of the roots of any particular plant. The interval between applications of water should be spaced to permit soil to become somewhat dry. 2. Before taking that vacation, irrigate and fertilize the lawns, bedding plants, trees and shrubs. 3. Colorful double Transvaal Daisies come in eye-catching full sunshine all days. Home-makers want up-to-date kitchens with today's labor-saving devices. Often all that's needed to modernize a kitchen is the installation of one or more built-in appliance. Such appliances can be financed conventiously with an FHA-insured home improvement loan.
