The Good Shepherd
Christ liked to depict himself as a shepherd: "I am the good shepherd, and know sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me even so know I the shepher: and I lay down my life for the sheep" (John 10:14, 15). God had a particu-affection for the weak sheep as we read in the book of Ezekiel: "I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick" (Ezekiel 34:16). Christ knew his love for the lost sheep in his story about the man who had a hundred sheep in the desert. He lost one and he left the ninety-nine to go and look for the one that strayed away. When he had found it he called his neighbors to rejoice with him. Then Christ added: "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sin that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repence" (Luke 15:7).
We know then who the lost or strayed sheep is: it is every sinner who has strayed away from God. At the time of Christ, the Pharisees did not associate with sinners. In fact one day they asked Christ's disciples why he went into the company of sinners. Christ overheard the question and replied: "They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick" (Matt. 9:12). It is a sick man and not a healthy one who needs a doctor. On another occasion when Christ was dining with Simon, the Pharisee, a "woman in the city, which was a sinner" came in. This woman began to wash his feet with her tears, wipe them with her hair and anoint them with precious oil. To the shocked Pharisees he announced "her sins, which are many, are foren her for she loved much." He turned to the woman and she heard the sweetest words that a creature could ever hear from her creator: "Thy sins are forgiven" (Luke 7:48).
All sinners would like to hear those consoling words "thy sins are forgiven." We would "for there is no man that sinneth not" (1 Kings 8:46). It would seem strange that Christ, the good shepherd, who would give us the sacrament of baptism which imparts supernatural life to the soul, would not give us a visible means of storing that life when it is lost through sin. When Christ had risen from the dead appeared to Peter and the other apostles at the sea of Tiberias. Here Christ ap-ented Peter as his shepherd: "feed my lambs, feed my sheep" (John 21:15, 16), just God himself had appointed David to take care of his flock, "and I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed me and he shall be their shepherd" (Ezekiel 34:23). Peter was now the new shep-

Peter was now the new shepherd but with far greater powers than David: "Whose soever sins ye remit, they are shitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained" (John 20:7). Not only Peter but also the other apostles received the power from Christ to give sin, as St. Ambrose (died 303 A.D.) explains, "Christ granted this (power to give sins) to the apostles, and from the apostles it has been transmitted to the vice priests." Even as his father sent him as a shepherd now he was sending out others to take his place "as my father hath sent me, even so I send you." Like the man in the house of Simon, the Pharisee, sinners would always want to hear "thy sins are forgiven."
