GAS CO. EDUCATIONAL ADVERTISING PROGRAM SHOULD NOT BE CURTAILED
The Staff of the Public Utilities Commission in their report to the PUC have recommended that advertising by the two Southern California Gas companies should be curtailed by at least 50%.
It seems that such a suggestion is contrary to good business judgment and indicates pretty forcibly that members of the staff have not met paulls and managed business.
PROGRAM SHOULD NOT BE CURTAILED
The Staff of the Public Utilities Commission in their report to the PUC have recommended that advertising by the two Southern California Gas companies should be curtailed by at least 50%.
It seems that such a suggestion is contrary to good business judgment and indicates pretty forcibly that members of the staff have not met payrolls and managed a business of their own. In such a case they would realize that in this modern age of competition (viz: gas versus electricity) an important part of any business is the selling of that firm's product and advertising promotion is very vital to in crease the sales of these large institutions.
They cannot compete with Electric corporations if they are forced to curtail their advertising expenditures.
Budgets are predicated on sales and certainly the Gas companies are entitled to protect their interests and increase their sales of appliances which have a direct effect on their volume of business and the budget that they appropriate for advertising and sales promotion.
We urge the State Public Utilities Commission to overrule the Staff recommendation and permit the Gas companies continued progressive program of advertising.
Three Cheers for American Legion
The California Department of the American Legion deserves the commendation of loyal Americans for their continued attack on un-American activities.
At their most recent convention in San Francisco they passed resolutions criticizing Hollywood producers for allegedly assisting "the international Communist conspiracy" by retaining "disloyal" employees and further urged a Senate investigation of the American Civil Liberties Union "relation to the Communist international conspiracy and its source of income."
But the resolution criticizing the NBC drama of the Sacco-Vanzetti case which was aired on television attracted our attention for we viewed that TV and came to the conclusion that the courts of our nation were severely ridiculed and without cause.
To those of us who remember the Sacco-Vanzetti case in the '20s, we believe that they secured a fair and impartial trial but the NBC drama created an entirely different atmosphere.

To those of us who remember the Sacco-Vanzetti case in the '20s, we believe that they secured a fair and impartial trial but the NBC drama created an entirely different atmosphere.
The trial dragged on for years and the death sentence was finally carried out.
Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists and should have been banished from this country long before they became involved in their final act of violence.
The American Legion deserves the plaudits of the nation for their consistent stand in defense of our American way of life and its effort to protect the sanctity of our courts.

Garbage Disposal Tips Provided
Many home-buyers moving into their new homes will be using a garbage disposer for the first time.
Manufacturers offer these tips for the most effective results:
1. Always use cold rather than hot water when the machine is in use. Cold water compresses grease into globules that are easily flushed down the drain pipe. Hot water creates a slimy substance out of grease that tends to coat the pipes.
2. Don't put lye or other chemical cleaners into the disposer. Producers of drain cleaners warn that their product is injurious. Disposers are self-cleaning.
3. Do not put abrasives such as glass or metal into the disposer.
4. Fruit pits and bones can be ground up and liquified by dish-

Pros, Cons Told of Converted Sea Water
In a speech to convention members of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Samuel B. Morris, Consulting Engineer for L.A. Water Department, said he does not think the economic use of converted sea water will compete in cost with the water from aqueducts in the three Pacific Coast states.
"Certainly it will not compete with the 1¼ billion dollar California Feather River delta diversion project to be voted on in November," he said.
"When more water is required after 1990 a fresh look can be taken but even at that date such water from the sea will not be able to compete with additional aqueducts supplied from surplus waters of Northern California."
Morris estimated the price of converted sea water would have to drop to $1 to $10 per acre to meet irrigation needs.
Morris was also pessimistic about prospects of converting inland saline water, partly because of the problem of disposing of the enriched brines after recovery.
