$290,000 United Fund Goal Set for Forthcoming Appeal in Anaheim Area
A goal of $290,000 for the forthcoming United Fund appeal for minimum needs of the 15 participating agencies was established at the recent special meeting of the Anaheim United Fund board of directors. Forty volunteer Board Members and Agency Representatives attended the meeting at which the budget was approved and the 1960-61 Campaign Goal set for Welfare and Youth Services during the year 1961, in the communities of Anaheim, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Stanton and the intervening unincorporated areas.
Mr. C. B. Miller, Comptroller, Delco-Remy Division, General Motors Corporation, served as Chairman of the volunteer Budget Committee and presented the recommended budget for the 1960-61 Campaign, stating that the goal as proposed represented the minimum amount necessary for the 1961 operation of the Welfare and Youth Agencies participating in the Fund. Miller thanked members of the Budget Committee, naming: Msrs. Clyde Cromer, Dick Johnson, D. P. O'Neill, Willard Colean, Richard Gay, A. P. Pappas, Kenneth Nellsen and Mrs. Allan Koch.

Planning Commission Sanctions Four Varied Projects and Approves Special Permit for Sanitarium Project
The Anaheim Planning Commission approved four varied requests, meeting with no opposition, and postponed hearing a seventh, since the applicant was not present. They denied one request for a variance because no plans were submitted and approved a special use permit allowing construction of a 54-bed sanitarium.
The sanitarium is to be located at Magnolia Ave., north of Lincoln Ave., backing up to the proposed flood control channel. The permit was requested by C. F. Weinen, of Orange.
The Supreme Investment Co. received approval to waive minimum height requirements to perimeter construction of two-story apartment buildings on Orangewood Ave., east of Haster St. Approval was also given Carmen Scalzo's variance request to permit a two-story 40-unit motel on Harbor Blvd., opposite Disneyland.
THE PLANNERS approved a variance to allow a four-foot encoachment into the rear yard at 2110 Judith Lane. The request was submitted by Charles Beames. They also approved construction of a 70-unit motel on Orange-thorpe Ave. between Raymond and Lemon Sts., submitted by John W. McMichael for Jack Dutton. The motel will be next to Dutton's Jungle Gardens.
The planning commission denied a variance to permit construction and operation of a cocktail bar on Topanga Dr. between Lincoln Ave. and Del Monte Dr. because of lack of construction plans. The applicant was Lands and Building, Inc.
One variance application was postponed for one week, since the applicant, Arlee Industrial Co., was not present. The variance asked permission to operate a retail and manufacturing building on Manchester Ave. between Katella and Orangewood Aves.
Santa Barbara County's Fair will be held July 20 to 24 at Santa Maria.

Anaheim’s District Scout Executive Attends Wood Badge Training Course
Walt Pearson Anaheim District Scout executive, attended the wood badge training program at Shaver Lake, in the mountains, northeast of Fremo.
The one-week training course is the ultimate for leaders in Scouting, according to Bob Ashley, holder of the badge, and Valencia Scout executive.
Scout leaders are invited to attend the course. The invitation is accorded only to dedicated men, who are given a pioneering training which will outfit them to train other leaders.
The pioneering course was originated by Arthur Baden-Powell, the Britisher who founded Boy Scouting. He sat at a campfire one day and carved two charred wooden beads, and strung them on a leather thong.
When a pioneer goes back and trains other leaders, he is entitled to a third bead, and to wear the woggle with a small tartan on the back around his neck:
Washo, Shoshone and Plute tribes living in the Inyo-Mono country along the eastern side of the High Sierra gather at Bishop for the Indian Fair July 28-31. There will be costumed dances and exhibit and sale of their handicrafts. To encourage the Indians in their ancient arts, prizes are given for basket weaving.
