Pezaric had been hit in the rear of his head by a swinging pulley which inflicted a severe cranial laceration five inches in length and one-half inch wide. Bleeding profusely, the crew had almost despaired of hope, when the emblem of the Sheriff's Aero Squadron was sighted on the secured aircraft.
Notthoff was awakened at 4:00 a.m. with the urgent plea for assistance. Within minutes, the injured fisherman was placed in the mercy plane, and enroute to the nearest hospital in La Pas, 90 miles north of San Lucas. The timely flight saved Pezaric's life and he will recover completely.
Pilots are required by Mexican Officianado to file flight plans and pay landing fees at La Pas, but both formalities were waived in deference to the Mercy Flight, and as a reciprocal courtesy to the emblem-marked Aero Squadron plane.
The act of heroism was brought to light at the last regular monthly meeting of the Orange County Sheriff's Aero Squadron. Martin told fellow members of having received word from Mexican officials, and a message of gratitude and acknowledgment for the fine work of the entire aero squadron.
Notthoff had been on a routine flight South of the Border. He has been a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Aero Squadron for three years and carries a pilot's log attesting to 1000 hours of air time.

New Civil Defense Law Readied
In case of a nuclear attack or any other disaster the seat of the Orange County government would move to the mission town of San Juan Capistrano, according to a new ordinance created to modernize the county's civil defense program.

Also included in the law are the means for the selection of a supervisor for each district in the case the elected officer is killed or incapacitated.
