Senator Thur WASHINGTON.—A series of research projects to assist California's half-billion dollar fruit and nut industry has been urged by U.S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel of California. After consulting with spoken men for this branch of California, extensive agricultural economists the senior California Senator assisted the Senate Agricultural Appropriations Subcommittee to consider seriously recommendation that funds be provided to initiate high-priority studies needed to help growers, processors, and handlers of a variety of nuts and fruits. Kuch said in a letter to Chairman Richard B. Russell that he feels the requests deserve "the most sympathetic treatment possible." Commenting the importance of this type of agriculture often seems to be overlooked, the California lawmaker said that more active research by the Agriculture Department would aid growers orchardists, and others in a large number of States since the total value of these crops in 1958 exceeded $1,350,000,000. "In my own State of California these crops were valued at $58649,000 and represent more than one-third of the value of all agricultural production in the State the Republican Whip explained. 'It is well known that the overwhelming proportion of California production moves in interest.'" Indian Guides Base Members Around 'Father-Son' Team In spite of statements and impressions to the contrary on T.V. the white man did actually learn many things from the Indians, according to YMCA leaders in this area. A large North Orange County group now participate in a program designed by an Ojibay Indian, Joe Friday of Canada. Now popular throughout the world, the program was born when Friday told the YMCA that the white man does not spend enough time with his son. He said white children were being raised by women which caused so many problems with the younger generation. BUILT AROUND the plan correct this, membership in organization requires that father accompany his son to meetings and to all outings. projects undertaken by the gr must be dual participation of father and son. When the group pl a kite fly or undertakes the construction of racer cars, the fat and son together build and participate together.
