Deadline For TB Essay Contest Set April 7; County Students To Compete Robert A. Geier, public relations counsel for the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Assn., today reminded high school and junior college journalism students participating in the Third Annual TB Student Press Conference competition that deadline for submitting entries is Thursday, April 7. Students must have their editorials, news releases or feature stories, with or without photographs, printed in their school newspaper in order to be eligible. In addition to the individual student awards of $10.00 and a certificate of achievement to the best high school and junior college entrants, the school newspapers presenting the best coverage and team effort will receive plaques. Judging of the entries will be done by members of the Orange County Press Club. That committee includes: Tom Keevil, editor of the Costa Mesa Globe-Herald, this year's Press Club president; Fred Allen and Jim Cooper, of the Garden Grove Daily News; Harry Harvey, administrative assistant to State Senator John A. Murdy, Jr., and Bill Farr, Santa Ana Register, all former Press Club presidents; Bob Geivet, Orange County section editor of the Independent, Press-Telegram; and Bud Lembke, Los Angeles Times. The TB Student Press Conference is one of the public education programs sponsored by the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Assn. to promote a greater knowledge by laymen of the problems of TB in the county. Meet Notice The Orange County Parent Group for Handicapped Children and Adults will meet April 6, 8:00 p.m., at the Woodcrest Special Education Unit on Richman and Baker Aves., Fullerton. Dr. S. A. ANAHEIM OFF County Obtains Portable X-ray A portable chest X-ray unit which has been obtained by the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Assn. is now set up at the Orange County Garage, 5th and Sycamore Streets, Santa Ana, it was announced today by Kenneth M. Smith, P.D., chairman of the Case Finding Committee for the TB Association. Chest X-rays, free of charge, will be given to the public from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Monday through Friday, Dr. Smith said, urging that those over 15 years of age who have not had a chest X-ray in the past year should try to make it a point to have one at the garage if they are in the area. Dr. Smith pointed out that "this is a shakedown operation" and is the first time that the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Assn. has conducted its own portable unit. After approximately one month in Santa Ana, the unit will be moved to some other strategic location. Previously, the association had sponsored free chest X-rays by the use of a mobile truck chest X-ray unit for a more limited time in several different areas which prohibits full survey coverage, Dr. Smith said.. By establishing a year-round program of free chest X-rays in central areas, the association hopes to service a far greater number of residents at proportionately less cost than occasional rental of the mobile truck. Facts, Fads and Fancies THE CIRCUS FACT—The oldest circus family in the modern tradition was that of Johahn Eberhard Renz, an illiterant German acrobat who bequeathed his trade to several generations. FAD—The small boy sneaking under the circus tent was a fad of yesteryear, with the Big Top moving indoors in the 1950s. FACT—Circus acts have become great favorites on TV variety shows. A refreshment favorite of TV viewers are drinks made with popular Four Roses. FANCY—Circus troupes are among the most superstitious of show people. Among other things they believe that tossing a hat onto a bed is bad luck and will never allow anyone to do it. Anaheim Collects $46,986 In Gas Co. Discussions will include such interesting points as methods of travel, crossing borders, eating out, and sight seeing, and the basic geographical aspects of Europe will be outlined with emphasis upon the traveler. Reference materials and maps will be introduced and photographs will be used to illustrate points of interest. Instructor for the class will be Dr. James D. Blick who teaches geography at Fullerton Junior College and has done extensive traveling in the Pacific, in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe. Classes will be held each Tuesday evening over an eight-week period. There are no requirements for admission, according to Dr. Blick, and no home work will be assigned. Plan Flower Show Several members of Anaheim Garden Club and East Anchorage Company made today (March 31) by Southern Counties Gas Co. to Orange County and 21 of its communities, to the tune of $325,142, Justin M. Kennedy, division manager for the utility, announced. The payments—for use of streets and highways—were up almost $40,000 from similar amounts paid by the gas company for 1958. In addition to the county, which was paid $65,529, franchise payments to communities, Kennedy said, were as follows: Anaheim, $46,986; Brea, $4,358; Buena Park, $18,504; Costa Mesa, $15,502; Cypress, $1,333; Dalryland, $937; Fountain Valley, $181; Fullerton, $26,716; Garden Grove, $32,355; Huntington Beach, $8,520; Laguna Beach, $6,654; La Habra, $11,021; Newport Beach, $14,452; Orange, $13,127; Placentia, $2,556; San Clemente, $7,081; Santa Ana, $40,617; Seal Beach, $2,537; Stanton, $4,232; Tustin, $1,519; Westminster, $10,-425. When combined with real and property taxes—first installment of which the utility paid in December—Southern Counties will be responsible for more than $1,-325,000 this year to Orange County communities it serves, and in which it has property located. Over-all, the gas company paid $1,222,665 for franchises to eight counties and 89 incorporated communities. When combined with all real and property taxes throughout its system, the gas company will make payments of approximately $9 for each of the 716,475 customers it served at year-end 1959. Kennedy said. Classes will be held each Tuesday evening over an eight-week period. There are no requirements for admission, according to Dr. Blick, and no home work will be assigned. Plan Flower Show Several members of Anaheim Garden Club and East Anaheim Garden Club met recently at the home of Mrs. S. K. Walters, for dessert and an afternoon of planning for a flower show, to be held at Anaheim Ebell Club House on April 22nd. The show will be free to the public, with many flower arrangements and horticultural exhibits.
