Whitman's '1 Am an American' Marks Bill of Rights Week Assembly
"I am an American," by Walt Whitman was the prologue for the Bill of Rights Assembly scheduled for Santa Ana College Students today.
This assembly, which also included the enactment of the 10 Amendments in dramatic scenes, was one of the many activities planned by the college Bill of Rights Committee.
Suggesting the assembly presentations were members of the advisers committee who include Miss Agnes Todd Miller, Thomas Trawick, Frances Ege Lota Blythe, David Hartman, Ernest Craia, Edmund Hallahan, Peter Raven, William Corser and Sky Dunhp.
Heading the student planning group this year was Don Bissonnette, Associated Men's Student president. Linda Maxwell, Bill of Rights secretary, also helped encourage college students to realize the true meaning of the national observance.
Used in Speech Classes
Both Don and Linda presented a formal copy of the Bill of Rights to the Pacific Telephone Company for use in the lobby. A photo of the presentation will be run in TeleDigest, the company magazine.
Also scheduled for the college observance was a presentation by the speech classes. Members were sent to various classes and schools to describe the famous document and circulate replica copies.
A special halftime talk was given by Bissonnette at the recent Santa Ana vs. Fullerton football game in which a reminder was issued to all college students that Bill of Rights Week is an important observance.
Santa Ana College placed first among all Southern California colleges two years ago and second last year.
"For a Merry Yule -- Make It Safe"
The National Safety council announces a Christmas holiday safety campaign that will stress moral responsibility and appeal to every American to observe the commandment, "thou shalt not kill."
"It's a time for honest thinking about living a sound, full life and helping others to do so. This must surely include thoughts about driving your car carefully and soberly."
"We must have regard for our own lives and well-being."
$860,000 Flood Control Channel Given Approval
Two and one-half miles of flood control channel have been approved by Joe Brunner, assistant chief flood control engineer, who also promises that La Palma and Palm Sts. intersection will not be flooded this winter.
The channel, a link in the yet to be constructed seven-mile channel for Carbon Canyon Dam outlet, is located between East St and on the west bordered by the Santa Ana Freeway. City and county officials toured the 1½ mile of open channel and the one mile of underground channel as a formality of accepting the job.
The Norco Construction Co. of Artesia, completed the job in several months, or four months ahead of schedule. The work was started May 1.
Anaheim Engineer Helps
Officials said the channel will protect the northeast section of the county including Anaheim from excess water. The cost of this project was $860,000. The entire three phase channel development will cost $3,785,250 said Brunner.
The work was done with coordination of Anaheim City Engineer Frank Fehse.
According to Brunner in the future development, a channel from Carbon Canyon will permit...
"For a Merry Yule -- Make It Safe"
The National Safety council announces a Christmas holiday safety campaign that will stress moral responsibility and appeal to every American to observe the commandment, "thou shalt not kill."
"By moral responsibility," said Arthur B. Langlie, chairman of the council's National Committee of Religious Leaders for Safety, "we mean simply this: 'Motorists — and people in their homes, too—violate one of the Ten Commandments when, through disregard for safety, they cause others to suffer or lose their lives.
Honest Thinking Urged
'This,' said Langlie, former governor of Washington and now president of the McCall Corp., New York City, 'is the season for sober worship and family joy. It is also a time for honest thinking.
'It's a time for honest thinking about living a sound, full life and helping others to do so. This must surely include thoughts about driving your car carefully and soberly.
"We must have regard for our own lives and well-being, and patient consideration for the welfare of those who ride with us or who ride in other cars.
'Thoughtful, careful habits are wrapped up in the meaning of the Christmas season.'
The council's Christmas safety campaign continues from Dec. 1 through the New Year's holiday. It will reach its peak, the organization said, from Dec. 21-25.
Theme of the month-long effort, which will emphasize the need for safety on the nation's streets and highways, is 'For a merry Christmas — make it safe!'

We’re sure Sue will have her wishes fulfilled.
His name is Duke and he wants a Lionel train, a steam shovel and ‘a dump truck. Looks like Duke will grow up to be a contractor.
Mary Lou has her eyes on a Coney Island penny machine and a Party Play Pal. Evidently Mary Lou saves her pennies.
Randy and Ricky are brothers in Anaheim and Lou who is a playmate, resides in Long Beach. So they combine in a letter to Santa. Randy wants a portable TV set, Ricky, a gun with caps, and Lou a Play Pal doll, with two chairs and a high chair.
He's Going to Be Good
Mark, who writes well, wishes a fire engine, complete with bell and ladders—you forgot the helmet. Mark He advises Santa that “he’ll be a very good boy.”
Ramona, who is 6 years old a couple of days before Christmas, writes that she is a nice girl and would like a real ice cream maker a Shirley Temple doll, gum ball machine and dentine gum. Watch that appetite, Romana—it’s stylish these days for the girls to be slim.
Whoa, Nancy! So you want a fighter jet. Good gracious! These Space Age gals.
Likewise, Michael wants a missile, a Davy Crocket shirt and a hand grenade. There’s apt to be some action in that family Christmas day!
Lo’s just wants a lot of baby doll clothes and furniture to match, including a Pony Tail Lass in a Sports Car. That oughtn’t to be so difficult for that old magician, Santa Claus.
Honored at Dinner
The team was honored at dinner yesterday in the OCC Student Center which was attended by the OCC Board of Trustees administration, division chairmen and their assistants.
During the two days the team surveyed the college facilities and operation, interviewed instructors and administrators and observed the college at work.
Orange Coast College has always been accredited by the Western College Association since the college’s founding in 1940. The association is a national recognized regional accrediting agency. All colleges must be re-examined for accreditation every five years.

Speaker Describes East African Trek
"A Naturalist in East Africa" was discussed in an illustrated lecture by Lloyd Smith, instructor in zoology and life sciences at Orange Coast College, when he opened the new auditorium of the Riverside City Museum last Friday night.
Smith spent two months last summer in Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda, and told of his experiences with army ants, with a family of gorilla, at famous Tree-tops, among the stone-age Karnajo tribe, and at a puberty dance of the Kipsigi. He showed color slides and movies of crocodiles, elephants, rhinos, hippos, antelope, baboon, giraffe, zebra and some of the native peoples of East Africa.
