Santa Monica City Bus Line Makes Profit (Continued from Page 1) Municipal Transportation Lines (MTA) authorities which kills off patronage with constantly recurring fare boosts. Since Farrel took over, the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines has never increased fares. Yet it has granted increases in wages to its employees, this total-ing $72,000 one year. Passenger volume has increased from 10,957,137 in 1955 to 11,-437,354 in 1956, with increases in 1958 and thus far in 1959. In one year it gained 139,442 passengers over the corresponding figure of the year previous. The ANAHEIM GAEZTTE, believing that its readers should know something of the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines and its operation, presents this story as a public service, one more in the line of such enterprises undertaken recently to acquaint Anaheim residents of "what goes on" in their community. Farrel launched a "passenger courtship campaign, with Blue Buses" as the slogan. "Although nationally, bus ing has shown a 6 per cent da year," he comments, "we've creased by 4½ per cent each year. We're rather proud of this. We carry 6,000 school children a day and 99½ per cent are sw youngsters, and I think the other one-half per cent mean to be hasn't been easy sailing, but we keep our troubles to ourselves and never cry on the public shoulders. They have no time listen to sob stories. We have a continuous advertising program in the Santa Monica newspaper." Although nationally, bus ridings shown a 6 per cent drop year, he comments, "we've insisted by 4½ per cent each year. We rather proud of this. We have 6,000 school children a day, 99½ per cent are swell passengers, and I think the other half per cent mean to be. It has been easy sailing, but we our troubles to ourselves never cry on the public's orders. They have no time to sob stories. We have had continuous advertising program on Santa Monica newspapers." Day, the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines operates 100, 72 of which are quite new, with the recent delivery of eight new buses having bean made last month. The lines operate in Santa Monica, Venice, West Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades, Westwood, Palms and Culver City. Farrel stresses cleanliness, courtesy, safety and efficiency. "We set out to convince the public that riding a bus is not a social error—and we've succeeded. It was accomplished by making the service good enough and attractive enough, and by educating the drivers to practice courtesy and politeness. Our objective was to make bus riding a pleasure rather than a necessary dull experience." In an effort to make bus riding more attractive the traditional ivory and green interior decorative scheme was abandoned. Soft, pastel colors are used instead. The system's new coaches have beige-colored matting on the floors, pink hued ceilings and two-tone blue seat covering. The campaign also involved the elimination of signs telling the patrons where to exit, not to talk to the driver, request transfers only when fares are paid, et cetera. "We dispensed with the signs in the interest of making the patrons feel welcome," commented Farrel. "The fewer the signs the better. Thus we have no registration on our coaches. The patrons may exit at either door." Passengers may ask for a transfer at any time—although company prefers transfers be requested when the fare is paid. The drivers also are instructed to use their judgment in modulating passengers at transit points. "Transfer points are very important to the passengers," rel said. "The easier we make for them to transfer the passengers we'll keep." As for cleanliness, the SMU coaches are washed and vacuumed every night. They receive an interior scrubbing while passing through a washing machine. "Thus, there's no necessity women shopper; clad in clothing to fear that they'll their dresses dirty," Farrel clared. Driver meetings are held or five times a year—with cohesy and safety as the discussion topics. "Courtesy comes first," Frel said. "We believe that the conscious driver is the safe driver no favored candidate ___Fj(1) THE ANAHEIM GAZET has no favored candidate as who shall make a transportation survey.
