B4 - Anaheim Gazette (Anaheim, Calif., Fri., Nov. 13, 1950) Thousands of Acres of Orange Co. Arid Farm Lands May Be Converted Through New Water Line Project Thousands of acres of Orange County farm lands, scarcely touched by the onrush of city growth, will, in the relatively near future, be converted to urban development through construction of a water line bringing to it vital Colorado River water Orange County's frontier will then be pushed back to the Santa Ana mountain foothills. The water line, which could become an actuality within two or three years, will open up the southeastern part of the county where agriculture now predominates and also will meet the needs of water-short communities along the South Coast. In an initial step toward that end, representatives of the varied interests in that area are coming together to work out the best way to route the line. Organization Formed Formed into the Southeast Orange County Water Committee, the seven-member group is holding its meetings in law offices at 401 W. 8th St., Santa Ana. "Introduction of Colorado River water will be the key to unlocking the full-scale development of the entire area," asserts Ivan Hanson, elected chairman of the new committee. "Opening of the Santa Ana Freeway through this country was the first step. Now water is all it needs." More than 60,000 acres are in the area whose water needs will be studied by the committee. The area stretches from Irvine Co. land on south to include the city of San Clemente. Need Is Critical The need for imported water is most critical in the south coast section where the already established communities of San Clemente, Dan Point and Capistrano Beach are pressed for a supplementary source of water because of population growth and the threat of salt water intrusion of the underground basin. Most of the rest of the area is awaiting Colorado River water before intensive development will be able to get under way. Water wells and a limited amount of MWD water will permit some development before that time. Science Books Work of Fullerton JC Man Two new science books, authored by Fullerton Junior College science instructor Herbert Drapkin, have been adopted for publication by the California State Board of Education. Both books are titled "A Guide to Teaching and Learning." One serves as a teacher's guide for teaching science to seventh grade classes and the other as a teacher's guide for teaching science to eighth grade classes. Drapkin, New Factory Will Be Constructed on 18-Acre Site Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc., has purchased 18 acres in Fullerton's Southeast Industrial District for construction of two units, each about 25,000 square feet, for a total employment of force of around 150. Erection of the first unit is to start in April and the second later in the year. The plot is on E. Orangethorpe Ave., opposite the present Sylvania plant. Free Chest X-Rays Prove Successful The Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association today reported as "excellent" the response to the free chest x-rays in five communities and said that official readings of the x-rays would be available in approximately two to three weeks. The five communities in which the free chest x-rays were given were: Los Alamitos, 533; Stanton, 696; La Habra, 565; Buena Park, 805; Fullerton, 865. This represents a total of 3,464 chest x-rays taken while the mobile truck was located in the county last week and is a far better average than usual, according to representatives of the association.
