EDITORIAL Action Needed on Adoption of New Zoning Ordinance for Anaheim City A major item, and one of great importance to city councilmen at their regular meetings, is the deliberation of zoning matters. Not only do public hearings take up a good deal of time and thought, but because of an inadequate zoning ordinance councilmen are required to put more than a normal amount of time into reclassification requests. The same goes for the City Planning and Engineering departments. They are required to spend more time than is necessary in trying to fit the present zoning requests into an antiquated ordinance. The fact that the current zoning ordinance is outdated is obvious not only to councilmen but also to city planners. Councilmen so far have held several work sessions on a new zoning ordinance recommended by the City Planning Commission. With the help of engineers and professional planners the commission has come up with an ordinance fitted to modern-day Anaheim. It must be pointed out, however, that Anaheim councilmen at present are holding one meeting a week on regular business. Before the new zoning ordinance can be adopted, it probably would require some extra sessions by councilmen. This is asking a lot when you consider the job has no compensation and takes the councilman away from his day to day of making a living. But it still is essential that a new ordinance be adopted as soon as possible to help guide councilmen and builders alike in the growing days ahead for the city. It is not our desire to push the matter too fast. But more work sessions and then public hearings on the new ordinance are in order. Now that councilmen have finished their budget deliberations, the adoption of the new ordinance should be the next and most pressing matter of business. After more than a month's hearings, our Committee once and Means finally came with a bill which permits Secretary of the Treasury an interest rate above the tory 4¼ per cent, provides the President of the United believes it to be in the best interest of the country. This bit of legislation should have summed no more than three at the most, and should have the unanimous approval of Committee. The reason for this uncoable delay was that certain cratic members of the Council have been continually basting the President, the tary of the Treasury, and Federal Reserve Board for high interest rates country, and it has been a pill for those individuals any way identified withizing higher interest rates. Fall to Realize Too many people fall to that interest is simply the paid for the use of money same as wages are paid purpose of purchasing energy, and if there is a demand for workers than are available workmen will rise. This is equally when the demand for the money is greater than United Fund Rally Scheduled Here. The United Fund's victory rally has been scheduled for Oct. 29. Walt Taylor, campaign vice chairman responsible for the Advance Gifts solicitation, will attempt to get his phase of the campaign underway in August. Because the motels, hostels, cafes, and restaurant are experiencing their peak season now, Carl Karcher, chairman of this campaign division, will help to set the pace for the entire United Fund effort. By launching his division in August, he hopes to top by at least twelve and one half percent the $4,050 raised by this group last year. SEASON READY To get ready for a fast moving united teamwork effort, Adolf Schoepe has called a dinner meeting of the "Citizens Advisory Committee of One Hundred" for 7 p.m., August 20, at the YMCA. Schoepe, who served as general campaign chairman last year is chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee this year. The fourteen participating human service groups of the United Fund for the Anaheim area are: American Red Cross, Association of Christian Churches, Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, Catholic Welfare Bureau, Childrens Hospital, Crippled Children's Relief Association, Family Service Association, Girl Scouts, Orthopaedic Hospital, St. Ann's Maternity Hospital, U.S.O., Visiting Nurse association and the YMCA. — Boys' and Girls' work. UTT After more than a month of hearings, our Committee on Ways and Means finally came forth with a bill which permits the secretary of the Treasury to sell long-term government bonds at interest rate above the statutory 4¼ per cent, provided that the President of the United States believes it to be in the best interest of the country. This simple act of legislation should have consumed no more than three days at the most, and should have had the unanimous approval of our committee. The reason for this unconscionable delay was that certain Democratic members of the Committee have been continually lambasting the President, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Federal Reserve Board for causing high interest rates in the country, and it has been a bitter pill for those individuals to in any way be identified with legalizing higher interest rates. Fall to Realize Too many people fail to realize that interest is simply the rental paid for the use of money, the same as wages are paid for the purpose of purchasing human energy, and if there is a greater demand for workers than there are available workmen, wages will rise. This is equally true when the demand for the use of money is greater than the usual. Winners Names Change Each Week!
