Perry, your Telephone Manages in Anaheim Deep on the ocean floor, undersea telephone cables carry calls from this country to Alaska, Hawaii and Europe. A cable ship like the one above put them there—to stay. Just imagine the problems involved if anything should go wrong with one of these cables—bending out a repair ship, locating the trouble spot, fishing up the cable. It could cost as much as $250,000! So telephone engineers had to design all the tubes and tiny electronic parts that go into an undersea cable to work continuously for at least 20 years without attention. That's the kind of telephone know-how, backed by constant research, that makes your service more dependable... whether you call across town or across the world. Schedules At City Crafts classes are being offered the summer months. A schedule is now in older who are interested in many period. Examples: paper crafts, string crafts. Classes listed as CRAFT CENTER. Crafts in these require me and equipment. Protects will be used. Examples: stenciling, jewelry making. There are three "Gateway" Cities handling telephone calls to Mexico: New York, San Antonio, and Anaheim. Anaheim handles on an average of over 10,000 calls per month. So you can see, Anaheim's population growth is not the only change taking place; it is also becoming an important telephone center. Service Clubs Get Telephone Company Films Pacific Telephone announces today that a new series of lectures, programs and films is now available for civic, professional religious and other community groups. According to H. I. Perry. New series offers a wide variety of subjects including up-to-date reports on recent scientific developments as well as other educational programs. Foremost of the new lecture is "Adventures in Sound" which dramatically presents the adventures made in the reproduction of sound and its transmission since the early days of telephone. The telephone company's educational films include a complete set of those previously presented over local television stations: "The Unchained Goddess" a story of weather, "Our Mr. Sun" the history of the sun and its impact on earth's life; "Gateway to the Mind" depicting the functioning of the human sense; and "Hemo, the Magnificent" A workful motion picture describing the physical functions of the human body. Service and civic groups interested in any of these programs or others now available may secure them by contacting their local telephone, company business office. August, 1871 At a meeting held last Monday evening at Enterprise Hall, a permanent organization of the fire company was effected, and the following named gentlemen re-elected as officer for the ensuing year: S. J. Davis, president; R. Luedke, vice-president; J. A. F. Heyerman, secretary; F. Schneider, treasurer; Pete Richards, foreman; Louis Durr, first assistant foreman. We are sadly in need of a few sidewalks and we believe there is no other purpose for which our people would so gladly pay taxes as this. It is very disagreeable walking in the hot sand, and we commend the subject to the consideration of our city fathers. We enjoyed on Saturday last, the pleasure of a drive over the plains to the thriving colony of Westminster. Its location is nearly adjoining that of the Sears settlement on the north and west, lying between the latter and Anaheim Landing. It was laid out last fall by our enterprising fellow citizen, Rev. L. B. Webber, on the ranches La Bolsa and La Bolsa Chica, about 8 miles south-westerly from Anaheim. It embraces about seven thousand acres each. One tract of 160 acres has been subdivided into two acre lots for a town site. Twenty-five of the farm tracts are sold and eleven residences built thereon. The present dwellers upon the tract are Messrs. Anderson, Moffett, McChesney, side. One of the horses fell with the wagon, the other remaining on the dump. The wagon was demolished but Tim escaped with minor injuries. Dr. Bullard was down from Los Angeles one day last week and dropped in to see him. He informs us that his distinguished patient, Madame Modjeska, is recovering at her home in the Santiago and will soon be able to go to the seashore. Judge Dick Egan and Capt. Healey are engaged in surveying and relocating the old ranch lines of the Santa Ana Canyon. The Judge was in town early on Monday laying in a stock of provisions and the Captain came over from Long Beach. Both were later driven out to their place of operations. Probably no two men in the state are so conversant with the lines of the old Spanish grants as Judge Egan and Captain Healey. Aug. Menzel informs us that if the business men of the town would patronize the street carline as often as we do there would be some possibility of the institution getting along without recourse to an assessment once in a while, with the possible contingency of a stand-off in wages. If the business men would squander a nickel in a ride on the cars occasionally and see what a really beautiful thoroughfare Center street is from end to end, and how badly it needs sprinkling from depot to depot, it would be better all around. Stop the leaks in the water works and sprinkle low citizen, Rev. L. B. Webber, on the ranches La Bolsa and La Bolsa Chica, about 8 miles southwesterly from Anaheim. It embraces about seven thousand acres each. One tract of 160 acres has been subdivided into two acre lots for a town site. Twenty-five of the farm tracts are sold and eleven residences built thereon. The present dwellers upon the tract are Messrs. Anderson, Moffett, McChesney, Rev. Mack. Stephens, Brown, Craig, Napier, and Colson, most of whom have their families with them, and it is expected that all of the farms sold will be occupied by the coming fall. The lands are at present at $13.50 per acre. The location is slightly and agreeable, only four miles from the sea and must ultimately make beautiful homes. A new precinct called Santa Ana precinct has been formed out of a portion of San Joaquin precinct, T. J. Scully is appointed clerk and Prudencio Yorba and John Rice judges to compose a bard of registration. A postoffice has been established at Riverside, San Bernardino county, and James P. Greaves commissioned as postmaster. Work on the Wilmington breakwater is at last likely to commence. Sealed proposals are advertised for in the Ala for its construction, the timber to be furnished by the United States, the work to commence the first week in September, and to be completed by the first of March next. We learn that the Messrs. Pierce and Richmond contemplate the boring of an artesian well on their land northeast of town. Mr. Kroeger is about to build a fine hotel building; on the southeast corner of Center and Lemon streets. Mr. John Hanna has already threshed over twelve thousand sacks of grain this season at Anaheim and Los Nietos. At a raffle at Enterprise hall last Saturday evening, the prize, a valuable horse, was won by Henry Boege. 62 Years Ago Institution getting along without recourse to an assessment once in a while, with the possible contingency of a stand-off in wages. If the business men would squander a nickel in a ride on the cars occasionally and see what a really beautiful thoroughfare Center street is from end to end, and how badly it needs sprinkling from depot to depot, it would be better all around. Stop the leaks in the water works and sprinkle a greater area of the city streets. Sprinkle Center street from depot to depot. Mrs. Metz is erecting a commodious building on Center street in front of the Midget barber shop, which has been moved back to make room for it. Architect Larsen is the designer, and pushing the structure rapidly to completion. Already one or two parties are after it to secure a lease of the premises. Mrs. Bittner was found lying on the floor of her bedroom on Friday afternoon last in a semi-conscious condition. Mrs. Bittner is 79 and was yesterday reported quite low but entirely rational. Uncle John Everhardy was looking around town yesterday for a stray horse that made his escape Sunday and refuses to be found. The municipal election on Saturday to vote upon the question of issuing bonds in the amount of $18,000 for the purpose of extending and improving the city water works and electric light plant, resulted in favor of the bonds by a large majority. 139 votes being polled for the bonds and 30 votes against them. One hundred and eighty-one votes were cast—a light vote. Wesley Methodists will hold their annual Ice Cream Social Saturday from 5:30 to 8 at their new location, 1457 E. The total assessments, including the probable railroad assessment by the state board of equalization amounts to $544,315. Tim Carroll is out again after an accident on the beet dump on Friday morning last that might have terminated seriously. Tim was driving up on the dump between two loads of beets, having in his light spring wagon a heavy iron bar to be used in repairing the dump. When near the tilt, Tim stopped his horses, to allow the unloading of the first wagon, the dumping of the beets scared his horses and they started backing off the platform, which is about ten feet from the ground. The side roll was grasped from its fastening and the wagon and its occupant tumbled over their annual Ice Cream Social Saturday from 5:30 to 8 at their new location, 1457 E.
