Speaker Named For Conference Charles Simmons president of the Simmons Institute of Los Angeles said a nationally-famed industrial speaker, will give the keynote address for the third annual Orange County Management Conference at Santa Ana College next Sept. 12. It was announced today by Co-Chairman M. W. Welds of Hughes Aircraft and Thomas H. Jeffers of the Western Research Division of Robertshaw Fulton Control Co. Simmons will have a keynote topic of "Your Growth — Your Responsibility." He will speak to the 1000 industrialists, business executives, supervisors and student-leader guests in Cook Gymnasium at 8:15 a.m. Dr. John Van De Water, head of the Executive Program at the University of California at Los Angeles, last year's keynote speaker, was so well received that he has been invited back to make the luncheon address, also in Cook Gymnasium. The massive luncheon on the main floor of the huge gymnasium will be one of the largest indoor banquets served in Orange County. City Awards Bids Councilmen awarded the bid for $5,933,46 after discovering the City Councilmen have awarded the Wintroath company the bid in installing a new well pumping system. Polio Victim Tries Handling One of Orange county's most severely stricken polio victim, an 18-year-old Brea boy, swathed in casts and breathing with a respirator, may be one of the best racetrack "pickers" in the business. Only he isn't in the business. He merely amuses himself making bets on the races—with himself and he is a consistent winner. Few can claim such status. Willis J. Dey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Dey of 653 Magnolia St., Brea, is the youth who follows the ponies from his bed. At the same time he is battling his way back toward recovery with the aid of surgeons, nurses, hospitals, physical therapists, modern equipment—and the March of Dimes. EMERGENCY DRIVE As county leaders prepared for an emergency March of Dimes Aug. 10 to 23, Willis's case is cited as evidence of the surprising new techniques in surgery for polio victims. Stricken 11 years ago in South Dakota, he has come a long way back, still has a long way to go, but is cheerfully waging his fight. Just now he is wearing a full body cast and lower leg casts as the result of some unique surgery to straighten his spine. He wears a "halo" head cast to aid in stretching the spine, and he breathes with a respirator. He is "ahead" of the ponies in his meadow kicking with him. GOOD PICKER—casts, had adopted one of the county's be remembered as the March of Dimes He also follows major baseball and thinks the Los Angeles Dodgers "may take this year if they don't slug playing them second or third way," he said. The Los Rams look like just about best that 'pro football has ever felt this fall.
