B1 - Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Calif., Thurs., July 2 Centralia Trustee Gets Recognition Earl R. Travers was honored by fellow board members in Centralia School district at a dinner given at Raymond Temple school cafetorium. Travers has been member of the board for six years, five of which he served as clerk. He did not seek re-election on May ballot to retain his seat in the school board. Glen H. Dysinger, Sr., superintendent, praised Travers for the time he devoted to Central district and lauded his interest in school affairs. The superintendent reminisced on the election of 1953, when Travers became member of the board. Central school had 300 pupils, nine teachers and ten rooms. The school budget was a "whopping" $411.09, and the cost per pupil was $179, one of the lowest if not lowest in the county for an elementary school at that time, singer said. Travers was elected the first time with 41 votes. The next year William Almand, the board's president, tallied 42 votes to win. Men were members of the "West Anaheim" Volunteer department, which headquartered at Knott's Berry Farm in territory. The station is now ena Park's number two firehouse. The volunteers were a strong critical body, Dysinger recalled. JULY FOURTH PARADE ROUTE—Many Anaheim residents are expected to attend Orange County's biggest July 4 celebration, the annual parade in Huntington Beach starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. The parade features 2,000 men and women from the Armed Forces with 225 entries. This includes 20 floats, 100 silver mounted horses. Parade theme is "The New Old Glory" featuring Alaska and Hawaii. Captive Ocelots, Owned by Anaheim Family. Have Kitten with Big Snarl It's usually a new born baby that causes some commotion and pride around an American household. But for the Al Matthews of 318 W. Wilken Way, Anaheim, it's a fuzzy little kitten, no bigger than a sizeze, but packing a hefty snail. The new arrival was born recently to domesticated ocelots, pets of the Matthews family. Little Rascal The little rascal will make the grade and grow into a beautifully-marked animal. Matthews says it's past the critical stage. Planner Outlines Population Growth For School Board Board members in Centralia School district were interested listeners during a recent meeting as Anaheim's Richard A. Reese unfolded facts and findings of that city's planning department regarding population growth in the future within Anaheim's zone of influence. Present at the meeting were trustees Jack Maurer, John Barton, Howard H. Lamb and William U. Almand, board president. Sitting in on the meeting was newly elected board member, Harold E. Fields, who will take office officially at an organization. The parents remain domesticated and proudly tend their offspring, which itself is a surity. It's most unusual for domesticated ocelots to bear young in captivity—and remain pets. Matthews, who has had Simba and Rodan for about three years, named the kitten Maja. Heads Club Matthews heads the Southern California Ocelot Club. He says the short-haired beautifully-marked beasts make "fine pets" and he highly recommends them. Already growing teeth, the youngster bares them when Matthews shows up at its nest. But Matthews explains this is only the little one's way of letting him know that he's a tough critter and won't stand any nonsense. Junior Hi-Y Club Visits San Dienno A visit through the San Diego Zoo and fishing from the Ocean-side pier were high points of a Trident Junior Hi-Y club outing. Club members left from the Trident Junior High School and stopped at the San Clemente beach area en route. Travers were elected the first time with 41 votes. The next year William Almand, the board's president, tallied 42 votes to win. Men were members of the "West Anaheim" Volunteer department, which headquartered at Knott's Berry Farm in county territory. The station is now ena Park's number two firehouse. The volunteers were a strong lital body, Dysinger recall which made many decisions community policy now handled the P.T.A.'s. The Travers were presented large silver tray as a memorial of his years on the board. Presidet at the dinner were president mand, Howard H. Lamb, J Maurer, new member Haffields and their wives in addition to the Dysingers, Mr. and M George C. Williams and Mr. Mrs. Palmer G. Campen, assist superintendents, Mrs. C. Wicker and Miss Beth Kroeg Board member John Barton his wife were unable to be present. A surprise card shower mark anniversaries of the Camp married twelve years ago the Williams, who celebrated their second Mrs. Marian Garhead, pf food services, planned dinner which was prepared served by Mrs. Mary Lyan, mager at Raymond Temple c teria and her assistant Mrs. C tine Serrano. District Receives $52.027 for School Operating Funds According to an announcement by Congressman James B. (R-28th Dist.), Anaheim U High School District has awarded the sum of $52,027 school operating funds pursuant to Public Law 874. Schools which are heavily denied by the impact of Fed installations in their area are gible for financial assistance der this Public Law. The amount certified forment is determined from theitative entitlement for the f year computed on the basis of formation and estimates cont Present at the meeting were trustees Jack Maurer, John Barton, Howard H. Lamb and William U. Almand, board president. Sitting in on the meeting was newly elected board member, Harold E. Fields, who will take office officially at an organizational meeting of the board on July 2. General Plan Reese revealed research information on general plans for proposed land use and how school districts will be affected. As he pointed out, parks and recreation are intangible commodities which are hard to measure and the city of Anaheim can only recommend planning in areas outside city limits. Portions of Centralia School District lie within Anaheim's boundaries. Board members looked favorably on overall plans to allow for a five-acre park with each elementary school and from 20 to 30 acre parks for each upper grade level school. Figures on which Anaheim based its proposal for population growth were gained through a "grandiose" saturation survey. Reese explained, similar to the land use canvass Centralia district recently completed. Conservative estimates of projected growth were found to be similar. $41,000 to School Chapman College received a check for $41,000 in unrestricted funds from the estate of the late Kate E. Smith of Los Angeles. Visits San Diego A visit through the San Diego Zoo and fishing from the Ocean-side pier were high points of a Trident Junior HI-Y club outing. Club members left from the Trident Junior High School and stopped at the San Clemente beach area en route. The club gained a greater understanding of animal, bird, and reptile life from the zoo tour. The chance to fish and to watch the fishing boats unload in Oceanside, was most popular. Club members attending were Rickey Cavender, Gary Reid, Wally Retzlaff, Mike Rachunok, Mike Sullivan, Darryl Sandlin, George Gantes, Richard Levy, Bob Lansing, and James Poirier. Don Nielsen, Club Advisor, headed the leadership of the Anaheim YMCA related Junior High Boys' Club. Kuchel Seeks More Railroad Control Tighter control over moves of railroads to discontinue passenger service was called for today by U.S. Senator Thomas Kuchel of California. Public interest and necessity justify amendment of the 1958 Transportation Act, under which numerous train and ferry abandonments have been made, to assure sufficient transportation, Kuchel told the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee.
