NEW PLAY AREA—Youngsters this week are "breaking in" the new 10,000 square-foot recreation area, shown above, which has been added to the Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving School, 2511 W. Lincoln Ave., in western Anaheim. The new area was dedicated recently and goes into service along with two swimming pools, golf driving range, sun deck area and snack bar which comprise the headquarters facility of the Sammy Lee Schools. Sammy Lee Swim School Scores Second Victory The Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving Schools of Anaheim scored for its second successive pre-Orange County Swim Conference triumph Saturday with a 247 to 83 victory over the Glades Swim Club of Whittier at the Glades pool. The Lee splashers, who previously defeated Los Coyotes Country Club of Buena Park, 226 to Lain, Tommy McLain, Terry Messerall, Jeff Morris, Beverly Peart, Pam Peterson, Terry Rassmussen, Ellen Reid, Jane Scott, Mike Swearingen, and Dennis West. Webster Upsets The Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving Schools of Anaheim scored for its second successive pre-Orange County Swim Conference triumph Saturday with a 247 to 83 victory over the Glades Swim Club of Whittier at the Glades pool. The Lee splashers, who previously defeated Los Coyotes Country Club of Buena Park 226 to 84 will get their toughest test of the season today at 5 p.m. when they come up against Anaheim’s powerful Hawaiian Village Recreation Club, also winners over Los Coyotes and the Glades, at the Hawaiian Village pool. Meet Today Today’s meet will be the final warm up for the Lee mermen before they open their Orange County Swimming Conference schedule against Sunny Hills Swim Club of Fullerton on July 9. Lee swimmers scoring first place victories in Saturday’s meet were Doug Bell, Jackie Bell, Tom Bortner, Christine Carson, Luna Crede, Lee Dillon, Kim Dockson, Charlie Douglas, Adelia Emery, Vivian Gould, Cheryl Hall, Gary Hall, Terry Handley, Brooke Hartwell, Jean Heina, Peggy Hodson, Scott Lambert, Tracy Lambert, Maureen MacDonnell, Rooger Manderscheid, Mike McCormick. Legion Teams Set For Heavy Games Over Weekend Dave Kauple’s Anaheim American Legion baseball squad meets the always dangerous Placentia team on the latter’s field while West Anaheim plays Garden Grove at La Palma Park. Then Sunday Anaheim plays Placentia at La Palma and Elmer Barttell’s men travel to Garden Grove. In last weekend’s action at La Palma Anaheim downed West Anaheim twice by scores of 5-1 and 6-5. Perry Stephenson pitched the first victory while Jim Starr tossed the other. Leading the attack for Anaheim in the first game was Ricky Scheffler. In the second contest Jim Rodarte sparked the victors. Lain, Tommy McLain, Terry Messerall, Jeff Morris, Beverly Peart, Pam Peterson, Terry Rassmussen, Ellen Reid, Jane Scott, Mike Swearingen, and Dennis West. Webster Upsets Tobian in Driving Champion Event Twenty-year-old Bob Webster of the Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving Schools of Anaheim, upset Gary Tobin, 1958 National 3-meter Springboard and 10-meter tower diving champion, in the three meter springboard diving event and a near upset in the 10 meter tower at the Senior Invitational Diving Championships at Los Coyoles Country Club in Buena Park this week end. Saturday, Webster upset the national champion 541.7 to 517.2 in the three meter springboard event but failed in his attempt to make it a double victory in the 10 meter tower Sunday after qualifying first in the preliminaries and leading the national champ going into the final dive. Tobian’s last dive earned him a close 504.7 to 501.2 triumph. Dick Connors, third place winner in the 1956 Olympics finished behind Webster with a score of 479.65. Jack Furry, 15, and Rick Langdoon, 16, also of the Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving Schools, finished in sixth and seventh positions. Irene McDonald of the Los Angeles Athletic Club scored a double win with victories in the women’s 3-meter springboard and women’s 3-meter springboard. Athletics Lead In Ruth League The powerful Athletics of the West Anaheim Babe Ruth League, who take on the always dangerous Tigers Friday, tightened their grip on first place last week as they upended the Red Sox 5-1. On Thursday the Indians, behind the one hit pitching of Jim Placentia at La Palma and Elmer Barttell's men travel to Garden Grove. In last weekend's action at La Palma Anaheim downed West Anaheim twice by scores of 5-1 and 6-5. Perry Stephenson pitched the first victory while Jim Starr tossed the other. All-Comer's Meet Scheduled July 4 An all-comer’s track and field meet to be held at Orange Coast College at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4, has been announced by Norm Lumian, new head track and field and cross country coach for the college. Only registered athletes of the Amateur Athletic Union for 1959 will be permitted to compete, according to Lumian. Athletes who would like to compete but are not registered by AAU may apply to Larry Houston, 450 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles 12; for an AAU application. Registration numbers must be furnished by all entrants. The tribe is slated to go against the Yankees in the big Friday double header. In the Sunday twin bill the lowly White Sox proved that it could be done and slaughtered the almighty Athletics by a 10-2 count. The Sox will play the Yankees and the Red Sox today and Saturday. Anaheim Toppers To Play 2nd Game In Girl's League The Anaheim Toppers take on the Santa Ana Rebels tomorrow at 7 p.m. in City Park after defeating La Habra 9-0 last week in Orange Empire Girls Softball League Play. The La Habra tilt was the first league of the season. Other teams in the league are Fullerton, Buena Park Cypress, Placentia, Brea and Santa Ana.
