Enrollment Starts For New College Applications for admission to the new Orange County College for September 1959 are currently being received and admissions processed. Plans are well under way to enroll at least 100 full-time and several hundred part-time students. A building on the new Sunny Hills High School campus in Fullerton, located apart from the other high school buildings, has been leased for the coming fall and will be the location of all classes. First Students The first students to be admitted will be juniors with an elementary education major. Courses in economics, education, history, literature, natural science, philosophy, and speech are among those available. In September 1960 more comprehensive class offerings in a number of majors, including junior and senior and perhaps some graduate courses, will be available for an estimated 700 full-time students. The two classes entering in 1959 and 1960 will have the unique opportunity of helping create an important new college, introduce its traditions, and develop its student organizations. In twelve to fifteen years it anticipated that this institution may an enrollment equal to that of UCLA at present. State Approval Both the Assembly and Senate in Sacramento have given leis to the campus from 165 acres to 240 acres. PURSUANT to the provisions of Section 1770 of the Labor Code, the City Council of the City of Anaheim has ascertained the general prevailing law which this type of work is to be performed for each type of worker needed to execute this contract. Holidays as herein referred to shall be deemed to be New Year's Day, Decoration Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If any of the above mentioned holidays other than Labor Day and Thanksgiving Days falls on Sunday, the following holiday shall be considered a legal holiday. It shall be mandatory upon the contractor to whom the contract is awarded and upon any subcontractor under him to pay not less than the specified rates of wages to all laborers, workmen and mechanics employed by them in the execution of the contract. It shall be made out on a form to be obtained at the office of the City Clerk or the City Engineer of the City of Anaheim and shall be accompanied by a certified or cashier's check on bid bond for ten (10%) per cent of the amount of the bid made payable to the City of Anaheim, and shall be sealed and delivered to the City Clerk at the City Engineer. Apprentices may be employed in conformity with Section 1771.5 of the California Labor Code. The above mentioned biddder should provide a guarantee that the biddder will enter into a contract, if awarded to him, and will be declared forfeited if the successful bidder refuses to enter into said contract after being requested to do so by the City of Anaheim Such contracts shall forward into within fifteen (15) days after receipt by said contractor of notice of the awarding of the contract, unless such time is extended by the City of Anaheim. Each bid must specify the name and location of any building offence each subcontractor who will perform work or labor or render services to the contractor in or about the construction of the work or improvement and the portion of the work which will be done by each subcontractor. If any bid submitted fails to specify a subcontractor as aforementioned, the contractor submitting such bid agrees to perform the work himself. The successful bidder will be required to furnish a faithful performance bond in an amount equal to 100% of the contract price and a labor and material bond in an amount equal to 100% of the contract price. Said bonds are secured from a surety or bonding company satisfactory to the City Council of the City of Anaheim and shall be approved by an attorney as form and sufficiency before acceptance. Plans and specifications may be obtained from the City Engineer or the City Clerk of the City of Anaheim at the City Hall Anaheim, California for the sum of Five ($3.00) Dollars, if picked up at said offices, or the sum of Six ($6.00) Dollars if forwarded by mail. The successful bidder will be required to continuously maintain adequate protection of all his work and adjacent property from damage work on the above described improvement shall require supplies grown manually or produced at the State of California or prepared to prefer supplied totally grown, manufactured or duced in the State of California. Each bid shall be accompanied by a non-collusion Affidavit, which may be obtained from City Clerk. The successful bidder or his shall be required to enter into contract with the City of Anaheim manner and form approved by City Attorney of the City of Anaheim. The City Council reserves the right to reject any and all bids or to extend it by law, and reserves the right to make an award lowest responsible bidder found determined to serve the best end of the City of Anaheim. Dr. Johnston opened one of the first medical clinics in Orange county in partnership with Dr. William Wickett. Later Dr. Wickett withdrew from practice and Dr. Samuel Gendel became a partner in the Johnston-Gendel Clinic, 77 No. Claudina St., Anaheim. In other business the council continued the public hearing on the request by Standard Development Corp. waving the minimum size and floor area requirements on property on the west side of Knott Ave., between Ball L. and Cerritos Ave. He was a member of the American Medical Association for 50 years and received his 50-year pin from the association. He was a member of the surgical staff of the Orange County, Anaheim and Fullerton Hospitals for many years. He was president of the staff of St. Joseph Hospital from 1930 to 1940. He retired from medical practice in 1946, having sold his clinic to Dr. Gendel, his successor. Commission OK's City Annexation Anaheim's 112 acre Placentia-Cerritos annexation has been approved by the Orange County Boundaries Commission.
