3 - Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Calif., Thurs., April 6, 1958 WESTERN PACIFIC—Joseph Lillo, chief ship's serviceman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Lillo of 9562 Canton Ave., and husband of the former Miss Ann Brindle of 9562 Canton Ave., Anaheim, is serving aboard the destroyer tender USS Bryce Canyon operating with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. The 16,000-ton tender, which departed its home port, Long Beach, Calif., on Feb. 16, has won first place in battle efficiency competition among small Pacific Fleet destroyers during each of the past four years. The Bryce Canyon is named after Bryce Canyon National Park, a scenic tract of land located in the towering plateau country of southern Utah. ALAMEDA, CALIF.—Leonard E. Nelson, Jr., airman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard E. Nelson of 1201 N. Euclid Ave., and John W. Taylor, fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin R. Taylor of 1143 Chateau Ave., arrived in Alameda, Mar. 12, aboard the attack carrier USS Midway after a tour of duty in the Western Pacific. Since the beginning of the cruise in Aug., the Midway took part in the Formosan Patrol and was engaged in operations with the U.S. Seventh Fleet. Between exercises her crew visited Yokosuka, Yokohama, Tokyo and Hiroshima, Japan; Hong Kong; Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. Departing Japan in late February, the carrier made a brief stop in Hawaii before returning to the U.S. SAN DIEGO — Robert R. Arnold, apprentice petty officer second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Arnold of 2259 Falmouth Ave., Anaheim, graduated March 20 from Recruit Training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. Apprentice petty officers are chosen from the ranks of the seaman recruits to assist Company Commanders. The selection is based on individual aptitude and leadership qualities.
