Sharrock of 1203 Adele Street, Anaheim, attached to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 8, took part in an anti-submarine warfare exercise from February 16-19, off the coast of southern California. "Skynet," formed of vessels of the U.S. First Fleet and several units of the Naval Reserve, was divided into two teams: the "Blue" defenses and the "Purple" aggressors. The Blue surface and air forces were seeking to prevent the Purple force submarines from breaking through a 600-mile seaward barrier off the coast. The exercise was conducted under the operational control of Vice Admiral R. E. Libby, the Commander of the First Fleet. WESTERN PACIFIC—Donald L. Hibbs, hospital corpsman second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Hibbs of 1258 N. The Division, which trains year-round to fulfill its role as a force in-readiness, has been based at Camp Lejeune since 1946.
