In the past five years there have been tremendous strides made in the replacement of "worn out" or damaged blood vessels in man. It is now possible to replace many vital blood vessels in the body, but this replacement must, of course, be with human blood vessels. Therefore, during 1957 a blood vessel, or Artery Bank, was established in Orange County, sponsored by the Orange County Heart Association and the Orange County Medical Association with the cooperation of the Orange County General Hospital. It is located on the grounds of the County Hospital. The blood vessels are obtained from deceased persons, usually young people who have suffered accidental death. The cooperation of the next of kin and the family physician are extremely important, because the arteries must be obtained and processed very quickly before deterioration of the blood vessel occurs. After the arteries have been selected by the physician and removed from the donor, the artery is then transported to the County Hospital, and the arteries are submitted to a special sterilizing process. They are freeze-dried in glass tubes and hermetically sealed. The tubes are then available for storage in the Artery Bank at room temperature. An inventory of available blood vessels is kept at all times so that the proper blood vessel may be delivered up. BERNARD W. PATTerson Bernard William Patterson, 36, of 2317 E.
