Dahlias Are Fun To Grow — Show The dahlia is indeed the King of garden flowers. It not only is adaptable to nearly any soil or climatic condition, but it responds well to even a little special care, and wonderfully to careful culture. Because of the many, many hundreds of fine varieties and types available, any garden planting will be enhanced through the use of this interesting species. Best known, of course, are the giant show-bloom types, as large as dinner plates, and breathtaking in their beauty. Not so well known, but becoming more popular are the medium and miniature types, easier to grow, more prolific in their blooming, more useful as cut-flowers, and possibly more suitable for the small home garden, as background or feature planting. All of these sizes, the giant, the medium, the miniature are further subdivided into the decorative varieties, both formal and informal, and the several types of cactus varieties. For the hobbyist there are many interesting varieties of specialty dahlias, the singles, the collarettes, the anemones, the orchids and the peonies, each a conversation piece in your garden. Literally dozens of varieties of colorful pom-poms can add bright spots of color, and a border of the dwarf varieties with half-inch blooms, can line a garden walk in a delightful color treat. Make Plan for Color An infinite variation of color can be planned in a garden planting of dahlias, for this flower comes in a marvelous selection of Invitation to Meeting Therefore the society extends a cordial invitation to all you who read this, all you who grow a garden, all you who might be possibly interested in growing dahlias, as a garden flower or as a hobby, to be their guests at the first meeting of 1959. To spend a pleasant evening with us, to learn more of the society's activities and plans, and if you like, to become one of us. This meeting will be held at the Santa Ana Register building, 625 No. Grand Ave. in Santa Ana, just south of the Grand Ave. off-ramp from the Santa Ana Freeway, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23. Refreshments will be served, and we'll be glad to meet you, and to tell you about growing dahlias, so that you too will know what we mean when we say that "Dahlias are Fun to Grow and Show." Make Plan for Color An infinite variation of color can be planned in a garden planting of dahlias, for this flower comes in a marvelous selection of colors and blends and bi-colors—all the floral shades imaginable except blue, for there are no blue dahlias. The dahlia is a show bloom surpassed by no other flower, and the raising of them, both for your own enjoyment, and to show in competition with other amateurs in the annual dahlia shows, is a hobby enjoyed by a great many amateur gardeners in all areas of the country, under the auspices of the American Dahlia Society, and the local branch or participating societies, all members of the national organization. A beginner with a few choice blooms to show can meet easy competition in the Novice class, progressing then to the Small Amateur and later to the Advanced Amateur class, as his experience increases and if his garden is large enough. In any event the friendly meeting with hobbyists of identical interests will prove an experience of much benefit to all concerned. Many Dahlia Societies California is fortunate in having a number of active dahlia societies, all of whom are members of the American Dahlia Society and the Pacific Southwest Dahlia Association. There are three in the San Francisco-Oakland arch, and one each in Fresno, Balersfield, Inglewood, San Diego and your local group, the Orange County Dahlia Society. Each of these societies stages an annual dahlia show, at which the exhibitors are the members of the host society and many members of the other societies, all engaged in friendly and competitive showing of their carefully nurtured blooms. A show will have dozens of exhibitors showing nearly five-thousand blooms, which together with the huge mass displays of local commercial grow-ones, the orchids and the peonies, each a conversation piece in your garden. Literally dozens of varieties of colorful pom-poms can add bright spots of color, and a border of the dwarf varieties with half-inch blooms, can line a garden walk in a delightful color treat. Make Plan for Color Designed especially for the small businessmen, it discusses in nontechnical language many of the Federal tax problems incident to conducting trade, business or profession, a new business, acquiring a going business, and selling a business. Federal income taxes, excise taxes, social security taxes, and withholding taxes, as they apply to corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships, are described in detail with numerous examples. Changes in tax laws which took place in 1958 are explained in detail. This booklet should help in the preparation of Federal Tax returns for the calendar year 1958 and fiscal years ending in 1959. Featured in booklet form is a 1959 tax calendar which tells you when to pay various taxes, file tax returns and do other things required by law. Also a check list of the various taxes for which you may be liable appears on page four. This check list is a real help to a person who is just starting in business. How much? Well, its the best buy you ever made for only thirty-five cents. Dr. Riatt Is President The Orange County Dahlia Society is an organization of amateur dahlia growers, mostly from the Orange County and Long Beach areas. The society has a very active and enthusiastic membership, led by the society's presiDr. Emmett Raitt, Santa Ana physician and a dahlia hobbyist of many years experience. The annual dahlia show is held in August, the 1958 show was a successful one in the Cook gymnasium at Santa Ana College. There is a meeting of the society each month, at which dahlia culture is discussed, the business of the society is conducted, and the members and their guests enjoy meeting each other and talking of their mutual hobby, often with an intensity known only to an amateur dahlia grower who takes his dahlias seriously. The Orange County Dahlia Society is planning a very busy year for the 1959 season, and to make the organization a more effective one, intends to increase its membership considerably. With the opening of the legislative session last week, I have been busy as a member of the Rules committee of the Senate, helping to formulate rules under which the Senate will operate this year. Many of my constituents have asked what the Rules committee does in the legislature, and since I have been a member for two years—and having been reelected by my 39 colleagues for another two years—I find more and more just how many decisions are made by that committee and how many responsibilities it has. Actually, the Rules committee is the housekeeping committee of the senate — the policy-making body for the upper house. It requires so much time, in fact, that beginning. The orchestra of Marty Mosa provided the dancers a great variety of musical tests as well as some of his stable arrangements, and not forget the vocals of Helen Ido, which brought some pleasurable memories to those present. President Schmidt stated The change in the tempo of our operations which resulted from the constitutional amendment adopted last November has already been apparent. The number of measures introduced has been cut sharply. During the first week of this session, almost 200 measures were "put over the legislature, and since I have been a member for two years—and having been reelected by my 39 colleagues for another two years—I find more and more just how many decisions are made by that committee and how many responsibilities it has. Actually, the Rules committee is the housekeeping committee of the senate — the policy-making body for the upper house. It requires so much time, in fact, that a member of this committee is not permitted to become chairman of any other committee in the senate. As an example of our duties, the five-man committee appoints all members of the other committees, including the powerful budget committee and the interim and joint interim committees. When one house fails to concur in amendments to bills made by the Assembly during the session, the Rules committee appoints the Conference committees to work out agreements. As had been expected, the inaugural message of our new governor called for legislative action in several new fields. Undoubtedly during the coming months of the current session the attention of the legislators will be focused on bills embodying his recommendations. Several bills carrying out some of his suggestions have already been introduced, and others covering the major points of his program will be dropped in the hopper as they are prepared. He indicated that he will issue a special statement on water legislation in the near future and said his budget will be submitted by the end of the month. Your Orange county delegation in the legislature will be most interested in the water problem, of course, because of the tremendous importance water plays in our growing economy. I shall try to keep my constituents well informed on the progress of bills affecting water. The change in the tempo of our operations which resulted from the constitutional amendment adopted last November has already been apparent. The number of measures introduced has been cut sharply. During the first week of this session, almost 200 measures were "put over the desk", this compares with nearly 1,000 bills introduced during the same period in 1957. Late last week members of the legislature were invited to an interfaith dedicatory prayer breakfast. I found the governor to be a dedicated, sincere and devotional man. A Catholic himself, Gov. Brown asked those of all faiths to join in prayer so that he and members of the legislature might do the most good for California's 15,000,000 people. "We all worship a just God," he said. "We recognize the need for divine assistance in meeting our daily tasks. Prayer will give us new resources, new reserves for meeting the trying days ahead." Church leaders, including Protestant, Catholic and Jewish, led prayers or made short addresses at the breakfast.
