Reductions in the death among women during pregnancy and childbirth raise an almost unparalleled achievement of medical restraints, the Foundation says. As the chart indicates internal mortality in this city has dropped 98 per cent since last four decades—few deaths per 10,000 live births in 1915 to 4.3 deaths in 1953. In actual fact pregnancy and childbirth are very causes of death in this city, accounting for only tenth of one cent of all deaths per 10,000 live births. PHONE: KE 5-2863 505 S. Advances In Maternal Health Last year, when some 4,200,000 babies were born in the United States, about 1,600 women died of causes related to childbirth. If the rate of just one generation ago still prevailed, Health Information Foundation Foundation states, the number of maternal deaths would have been as high as 28,000. Reductions in the death toll among women during pregnancy and childbirth rank as "almost unparalleled achievement of medical progress," the Foundation says. As the chart indicates, maternal mortality in this country has dropped 93 per cent in the last four decades—from 61 deaths per 10,000 live births in 1915 to 4.3 deaths in 1957. In actual fact pregnancy and childbirth are very minor causes of death in this country, accounting for only one-tenth of all per cent of all deaths among women of child-bearing age. Maternal death rates have dropped among women of all childbearing age groups, but the greatest gains have been made by women at the younger ages. The safest age group is the 20-24-year-old group, with a maternal death rate of 3.2 per 10,000 live births. Birth order, H.I.F. reports, is also related to safety in childbearing. Second births are safer than first, and third even safer than second. With fourth births maternal mortality rises, and the risks connected with later orders of birth begin to exceed those in the first. LEGAL NOTICE (Pub.
