Anaheim Division Robertshaw-Fulton Makes Atlas Parts Robertshaw - Fulton Controls Company's Aeronautical and Instrument Division at Anaheim produced 13 airborne components of the Atlas missile now in orbit. The controls firm supplied eight large hydraulically actuated cylinders, each three feet long, which controlled the missile's direction of flight by proper positioning of its two booster engines. These engines were dropped off before the vehicle went into orbit. The company also supplied four fuel and lox (liquid oxygen) quick disconnect devices, located amidships of the Atlas. They coupled supply lines to the missile from ground equipment, and automatically disconnected at the moment of launching. A portion of each of these disconnect devices stayed with the vehicle. Ground Support Equipment The firm also supplied major ground support equipment for the launching, including two hydraulic and pneumatic supply trailers. One trailer served the sustainer engine system, the other the booster engines. Prior to launching, each trailer controlled the supply of pressurized helium to the missile's shroud storage tanks which in flight released helium under controlled pressures to the large lox and fuel propellant tanks. The trailers also provided hydraulic fluid under carefully controlled temperature, pressures and flow conditions to the missile's servo system. The trailers also provided hydraulic fluid under carefully controlled temperature, pressures and flow conditions to the missile's servo system. To keep the temperature of the hydraulic fluid at a low level, a refrigeration unit was used which employed a special valve made by the company's Fulton Sylphon Division, Knoxville, Tenn. This valve sensed downstream temperature and diverted fluid through the refrigeration unit as needed to maintain a constant temperature output. Another product of the Aeronautical and Instrument Division, a liquid detection instrument, was used to control liquid levels in large ground support tanks which supplied lox and fuel to the missile.
